The bonding finally reached its end, leaving nothing but a lingering warmth and a heavy, musky sweetness that had yet to dissipate
in the room.
Emma was completely spent, her body so drained of energy that she couldn’t move so much as a finger. As her consciousness drifted, she sensed Drake loosen his grip slightly, though the heat of his body was still startlingly intense.
Battling the weight of exhaustion, she forced her eyes open. Her vision blurred, then snapped into focus as she looked at the man beside her.
A single glimpse was enough to sweep away the remnants of sleep, jolting her wide awake…
n the soft glow of the nightlight, Emma watched in shock as Drake transformed.
His hair–once stark white from the drain on his True Dragon Blood–was bleeding back into a silky hair as it had once been. His ace, previously as pale as death, now glowed with a vibrant flush that spoke of the shared heat still lingering between them.
As Drake’s eyes drifted open, a glint of gold streaked through his pupils, carrying a weight that seemed to demand the world bow
before him.
Emma’s eyes widened in disbelief, her breath catching as a spark of divine gold ignited between his brows, surfacing as three dragon scales.
A mere blink later, the scales faded, sinking back into his skin as if they were never there at all
Was it an illusion?
To be sure, she gently touched the center of Drake’s brow. The three scales bloomed beneath her fingertip the moment she made Contact–only to vanish again as soon as she drew back.
Emma tried again and again. Each time, the result was the same. It wasn’t an illusion, and she definitely wasn’t losing her mind.
There, etched into the center of Drake’s brow, three dragon scales shone with undeniable reality.
t wasn’t just his appearance, either; Emma could feel his aura shifting–the very air around him had grown heavy, pulsing with the pressure of whatever he was becoming.
‘What is it?” Drake’s voice was a low hum.
He brushed a loose strand from her face, his knuckles ghosting over the marks he’d left along her throat. His eyes were heary- idded, growing distant with something unreadable as he leaned closer, his breath warm against her skin.
“You can’t seem to keep your hands off me, yet you’re looking at me like I’m a ghost. Do I took different to you?” He leaned closer. “Tell me… was I enough for you tonight?”
Enough? I am beyond enough I could barely move. What more could I possibly want? That isn’t the point right now, though
Emma shot him a scathing look and seized his hair where it lay spilled across the pillow, demanding he look at the proof of his own transformation. “Don’t you see? Your hair. It’s dark. And your aura–it’s overwhelming. You feel so much stronger now.”

Drake glanced at the dark hair clutched in her hand and let out a faint smile.

“I know.” He grazed the back of Emma’s hand with a soft kiss. “Our bond is complete–and with it, the True Dragon Blood has finally awakened.”
He went silent for a moment.
“My body is healed, and my strength is back… but it’s more than that. I’ve ascended, and not just by a single rank.”
Drake seemed entirely unbothered by his transformation. He remained unnervingly calm, treating it as nothing more than an ordinary occurrence.
Noticing the disbelief written all over Emma’s face, he laughed softly and leaned in close, his cheek brushing affectionately against
hers.
“You don’t have to be that shocked. I’ve been holding my power back for a long time. Now that my body is restored, ranking up is as natural as breathing.
“Dragons are unlike any other beast–they were born with a divine shortcut. As long as a dragon is strong enough, they could leap across ranks without the slightest struggle.
“I was waiting. If I had hit Rank 14 earlier, the Beast God would have hunted me down. Now Jim and the others have shown their hands, there’s no point in hiding anymore.”
Drake’s explanation left Emma more than a little speechless.
Is he for real?
She’d always considered her own progress remarkable; hitting Rank 11 in the Interstellar Empire in a mere handful of years was a feat most wouldn’t dare to dream of.
Apparently, for Drake, ranking up seemed easier than rolling out of bed.
“There is more.” Emma propped herself up, her finger finding the spot on Drake’s forehead once more. The scales surfaced again, gleaming with that strange, noble gold. “Three golden scales. Right here. Just like the one on Lucien’s brow.”
A trace of jealousy colored Emma’s gaze as she looked at Drake. She had to admit, the scales were strikingly cool.
It made her wonder why she didn’t have one. After all, wasn’t she also a descendant of the dragon, born and bred on Earth?
“You’re wondering where yours are, aren’t you?” Drake asked, reading the look in her eyes. He brushed his fingers over the scales. “This is what happens when you hit Rank 13. Given my Golden Dragon blood, mine simply took this form.”
Everyone at Rank 13 has one? The realization sent a chill down her spine.
Emma’s breath hitched. “Are you saying… you’ve officially reached Rank 137”
He nodded once, his expression calm. In truth, he was a hair’s breadth away from hitting Rank 14.
Her brow furrowed. That’s strange.
Lucien had that plumage mark; she’d seen it a dozen times. However, if this was a symbol of the Ranks, why did Alaric and Kieran- one Rank 13, the other 14–neither carry a trace of a dragon scale?
