Rafael’s smile froze. So did the rest of him.

Spotting him, Tobin lowered its great head. The two bright peacock feathers beneath its nose fluttered cheerfully in Rafael’s face.

The younger cub rode on top, a fan of peacock plumes stuck into his rear. He was noisily nibbling a thousand–year energy fruit he had swiped from the royal gardens.

When he saw Rafael, his eyes lit up as though he had found his favorite toy.

“Ee–yah!”

Tobin’s voice boomed across the dead planet, brimming with innocent, heartfelt gratitude.

Tobin understood immediately and called to Rafael,

“Hang on, buddy! Next stop, a joyride at the Senate!”

It snorted happily. Dark matter streamed past the two splendid feathers in its nostrils like long plumes of exhaust.

With a violent twist, its great body tore through space. A gigantic festive ball trailing flashing red and blue lights, it hurtled toward the seat of imperial power: the Senate’s assembly planet.

Inside the Empire Senate, the mood was solemn.
