Chapter 983 Two Very Helpful Visitors

  • 9 from Cups

The void shuddered. An immense black hole beast thrust its head into view, a little bird glowing gold perched on top.

The pilots went ashen. Their hands shook so badly they could barely hit the emergency avoidance controls.

With a black hole that size appearing out of nowhere, escape was impossible.

All they could do was wait to die.

But the expected catastrophe never came.

The little bird hopped excitedly on the beast’s head, babbling as he pointed toward the long line of ships

Tobin understood at once. It opened its huge mouth and exhaled a gentle gravitational breeze on a cosmic scale.

Whoosh!

Like bowling balls rolling neatly down their lanes, all the ships slid smoothly into the acceleration lanes cleared by green lights. Not one suffered so much as a scratch.

A three–hour interstellar morning traffic jam disappeared in a single breath.

The pilots were dumbfounded.

“Where… where did this free traffic controller come from?”

Before anyone could make sense of it, Tobin and the cub were gone.

A few minutes later, in the neighboring deserted asteroid belt…

The younger cub waved a foot. The void trembled, and hundreds of enormous space rocks came together like building blocks.

Tobin supplied the mortar, breathing out dark matter as it spun and rearranged the rocks with furious enthusiasm.

Soon the disorderly belt had become a gigantic pig’s head suspended in deep space.

When the interstellar traffic patrol arrived, its officers stared helplessly at this cosmic piece of graffiti, over a thousand miles across.

“Captain… there’s an unidentified high–tier beast… making public art for us?”

The younger cub giggled on Tobin’s head, clutching its lashes and bouncing all over its enormous face as though it were a playground slide.

Tobin laughed uproariously and rolled through the stars. While it was at it, it used gravity to strip every

colored light from the patrol ships.

It happily draped the lights all over itself in glittering loops.

Covered in the patrol’s flashing warning lights, Tobin glowed like a mobile festival lantern against the black of space.

“Ooh, sparkly! I’m so pretty!”

It swayed its head in delight. With a joyful sweep of its enormous tail, it batted three abandoned asteroids away like golf balls.

Bang, bang, bang. Sparks and lightning trailed them as they hurtled into a distant, deserted nebula.

In the stripped–down patrol ship, the captain wiped cold sweat from his brow. Warnings about missing exterior fittings cascaded across his console.

“C–Captain… it took our traffic enforcement lights to make a necklace. Is that assault on an officer or theft of public property?”

An officer beside him asked in a small voice.

The captain stared blankly and switched off the communicator.

“It’s a medal for helping the public. Shut up and pretend the radar’s broken. We saw nothing.”

“Chirp, chirp!”

The younger cub stood on Tobin’s head, wings planted on his hips and round chin lifted high. His black eyes shifted toward a distant region glowing with multicolored energy.

The Imperial Royal Wildlife Park.

He pointed sharply with one small wing and let out a clear baby cry, as stirring as a bugle call.

“Ee–yah!”

Tobin’s black–hole–grade brain decoded the message at once.

“Charge!

“Little bird wants the buffet over there!”

Boom!

A great opening tore through the void. With red and blue police lights flashing all over its body. Tobin plunged eagerly into the royal park.

The park boasted the Empire’s finest defense system, supposedly tight enough to keep out an interstellar mosquito. Against a beast large enough to swallow a star, it was little more than plastic wrap.
