In the end, Leonard lowered his head, his voice dry as he spoke. “I understand, Grandfather. I’ll do my best.”
If he refused this time, his grandfather might truly kneel before him. That was something he could never accept. For now, he could only agree–and figure something else out later.
Leonel finally smiled in satisfaction. “That’s more like it. I have high hopes for you. Everything’s already been arranged. Tomorrow, you can head to Emma’s castle–start as a guard, and find a way to get close to her from there.”
Leonard nodded. “Understood. I’ll go make preparations.”
Watching his grandson’s retreating figure, Leonel’s lips curled upward in quiet satisfaction.
Two days later, sunlight spilled across the castle’s expansive training grounds.
The head of the guards held a thin resume in his hand, his sharp, hawk–like gaze sweeping over the young man before him. The candidate had an excellent appearance, and his Rank 7 strength was respectable. Most notably, those eyes–though lowered now–still carried a hidden edge that was hard to ignore.
The head guard studied him for a full three minutes before finally closing the file and nodding.
“Maddox Redgrave… not a bad name. Has a bit of that wild, untamed feel.” He looked at Leonard–now going by a different identity. “You’ve passed the trial, so you can stay. Just remember–working here, the most important thing is to watch your mouth and watch your eyes. Understood?”
“Understood.” Leonard inclined his head slightly, his voice low and controlled, steady and obedient.
“Take him to get his uniform.” The head guard waved a hand.
Leonard turned and followed the staff member deeper into the castle. The name Maddox Redgrave was one he had chosen deliberately. It wasn’t particularly elegant, nor especially pleasant–but it had character. Memorable at a glance.
Since he was meant to approach Emma in secret, he couldn’t afford to stand out too much- but he couldn’t be forgettable either. He needed to be inconspicuous, yet leave enough of an

impression that if Emma saw him, she would remember him.
After receiving his uniform, Leonard stepped into the changing room.
Once dressed, he stared at himself in the mirror. The black uniform wrapped tightly around him, sharp and disciplined. The major’s insignia that once sat on his shoulders was gone- replaced by the lowest–ranking guard’s badge.
“Huff…”
He let out a slow breath, forcing down the bitterness rising in his chest before pushing the door open and stepping out.
Instead of reporting immediately, he used the excuse of familiarizing himself with the grounds to quietly observe the castle.
So this is where Emma lives…
It was nothing like the Rysid family estate, which was cold, rigid, and steeped in militaristic order. This place felt refined–almost warm.
The gardens were filled with rare plants, not arranged to flaunt wealth, but carefully coordinated in color and placement, revealing the thoughtfulness of whoever designed them. Even the air carried a faint, sweet fragrance–something uniquely belonging to a carefully cherished female.
On the surface, the defenses didn’t appear as strict as the military’s. But Leonard’s sharp instincts picked up on countless subtle, hidden presences lurking in the shadows.
This place was nothing less than a fortress of steel wrapped in flowers.
He had thought slipping in would be easy with his grandfather’s arrangements–but it had clearly cost more than expected.
Inside the castle…
Knock, knock, knock.
The head guard stood at Lucien’s door and knocked respectfully.
“Come in.” Lucien’s lazy voice drifted out from within.
The head guard pushed the door open. Lucien was reclining in a large leather chair, casually
