He scrubbed the suds away from his eyes and saw a scene so absurd his mind stalled on the spot: Calum was perched on the toilet with the lid down, Edric was slumped against the bathtub, and Kieran stood opposite him in nothing but swim trunks, still holding one of the cubs.

Corvin went perfectly still. The bathcloth dropped from his hand.

“So…” Kieran tugged awkwardly at the waistband of his trunks and broke the silence. “Corvin, if I say we came back because we didn’t want you showering alone, are you buying that?”

Corvin dragged in a deep breath, then unleashed a howl so loud it seemed capable of ripping the roof off the bathroom.

“Out! Get out, all of you! Right now!”

The room was still hazy with steam, and his voice nearly shattered the ceiling.

The instant he started yelling, Edric and Kieran both locked up.

Neither of them even dared breathe. Their bodies tensed automatically, stomachs pulled tight, already waiting for the next random jump, but then the two tiny black fluffballs that had been having the time of their lives abruptly went quiet.

The older cub tilted his head, smacked his mouth once, and then his eyelids sank shut. With a soft plop, he tipped off the towel rack and dropped straight into a nearby basket full of sealed detergent packs.

The younger one gave out right after him. He drifted through the air in a wobbly crooked path, then landed neatly on top of his brother’s stomach, letting out the smallest, sleepiest purr.

The spatial turbulence disappeared.

“No… no more jumping?”

Kieran cautiously stretched one leg out first.

Edric remained frozen in place, one hand still clamped over his swim trunks. “Did they wear themselves out and fall asleep?”

Calum looked down at the broken scepter in his arms–the one that had once belonged to the founding father and was now split cleanly in half–then at the shampoo foam still smeared all over his hair. He said nothing.

Downstairs in the main hall, Emma was staring grimly at the hottest trending headlines on her lightcore.

“Trending News No. 1: Has the Empire’s “perfect defense” failed? Three “half–dressed men” plunge from the sky into Starlight Square, the founding father’s scepter broken in two!”

Looking at the three faces in the footage, faces she knew far too well, Emma drew in a long breath, flipped the lightcore facedown onto the table, and covered her face.
