Jim looked at Emma, his throat bobbing as his pulse kicked into overdrive. It felt like his heart had gone completely out of control, racing and throwing him off balance.
Emma kept her eyes fixed on his palm with an exaggerated seriousness, while sneaking glances at his ears, which were flushed so red it almost looked like they might drip blood. The smile on her lips deepened.
“Oh wow, Jim. Your hands told me…” She dragged the last word out slowly. Her brows knitted together as if she were reading something deeply mysterious. “Your love line is pretty deep, but why is there suddenly this extra pressure line showing up beside it?”
His breath caught as he spoke without thinking. “What’s a pressure line?”
She bit back a laugh and traced a small circle on his palm with her fingertip.
The touch sent another jolt through him. His throat moved as he
swallowed again.
“It means…” Emma leaned in a little closer. Their breaths nearly mingled. Then she lowered her voice. “From what I can tell by reading people through their hands, you didn’t come to bond with me because you were impatient or anything like that. Someone’s been putting a lot of pressure on you, right?”
When she finished, she lifted her head suddenly. Her bright eyes locked straight onto his. “Did I get that right?”
Jim went completely silent. He froze on the spot.
Can she tell all that just from my hands? How is she seeing this so clearly?
He quickly lowered his head again, too afraid to look at her. But he didn’t deny it.
“Yeah.” He nodded instead, admitting it openly.
“Then I was right,” Emma said it with complete seriousness, as if she really knew how to read people through their hands.
I don’t actually know how to read people through their hands. I just kind of understand Jim. I haven’t even had him around that long. And with how lazy he is, there’s no way he would bring up bonding on his own at a time like this. Something else must have pushed him. So what could make him bring up bonding? The only real explanation is the Beast God. Jim took Lucien up Beast God Mountain last night, and now he’s talking about bonding. The only one who could pressure him like this is Beast God.
Emma looked at Jim and gently took his hand. Her voice softened. “Jim, did the Beast God put pressure on you or threaten you? Is he going to do something to you if you don’t bond with me?”
He nodded. “Mm-hmm.”
Just as i thought, she asked curiously. “How did Beast God threaten you?”
Why is Beast God always sticking his nose into everything? People bond, and he still has to rush them. Does he even have KPIs or something to hit?
He pressed his lips together. “Weeding.”
She looked completely confused, staring at him as she had misheard. “What did you just say? Weeding?”

Jim nodded “Same as Gaellard and the others.”
Gaellard and Andre had gone to Beast God Mountain and were punished by the Beast God to weed at the foot of the mountain. Lucien had already mentioned it earlier.
Emma looked speechless. “So if you don’t bond with me, the Beast God is going to make you weed too?”
He nodded. “Mm.”
She was completely at a loss for words.
I just want to point at the sky and ask if the Beast God has a problem with it. But then I think about the divine-grade defensive system he just gave me, and I have to swallow it all back down.
“What about you?” she asked him. “Do you want to bond with me?”
The Beast God’s threat was one reason, but Emma still wanted to hear Jim’s own thoughts.
As for her, since she had brought him back in the first place, she had already agreed to bond with him.
When Emma asked that, Jim flushed and lifted his head. He looked at her, serious and steady. “I do.”
He answered fast, without hesitation. It wasn’t like before, when it took him a few questions just to get a single reply out.
Jim turned his hand and held hers. His grip was firm and warm. His palm was broad, strong. Nerves had already brought a thin layer of sweat to his skin.
“I do.” Afraid she might not believe him, he said it again, more deliberate this time. When he finished, he watched her nervously. “If… if you don’t want to, that’s okay. I can wait. I… I’ll go pull weeds.”
He held her gaze, all earnestness in his eyes.
I don’t want to pressure her. I want her to feel the same way I do, to want to bond with me truly. Not because the Beast God is threatening me, but she feels like she has to help, so she ends up bonding with me.
Looking at how sincere and genuine Jim was, Emma suddenly found him kind of adorable.
On purpose, she slipped her hand out of his and tucked it behind her back. She tilted her head at him, mischief flickering in her
eyes.
She smiled, teasing him. “You? Go pull weeds on Beast God Mountain? Jim, you can’t even be bothered to walk a few extra steps most days. You really think you won’t just lie down at the foot of the mountain and fall asleep? At this rate, the weeds will probably grow faster than you can pull them. And what then? The Beast God sees you doing nothing but sleeping and decides not to let you come back?”
The warmth in his palm vanished all at once. His chest felt strangely hollow, and his fingers curled instinctively.
At her words, Jim lifted his head, his gaze firmer than it had ever been. “I’ll come back.”
He looked at her, dead serious. “If I go to Beast God Mountain, I won’t slack off.”
