“Do you like it, Ms. Tibarn?”
Marcus stepped up behind Emma and folded her gently into his arms.

He rested his chin in the curve of her shoulder. The pale gray wolf ears atop his head brushed her check in a shameless bid for affection, while his tail quietly wound around her waist.
“I love it. I really do.”
Emma turned slightly and kneaded one of his soft ears between her fingers, wonder and delight shining in her eyes.
How could she not love something Marcus had prepared for her with such care?
Her heart softened, and she leaned in to kiss the corner of his pallid lips.
The answering spark in Marcus’s silver–gray eyes was immediate. Joy burst through him.
With a low sound in his throat, he tightened the arm around her waist and bent after her retreating lips. intent on turning that fleeting kiss into something much deeper.
Inside the barrier of ice and snow, their breaths mingled. The cool air seemed to warm at once, charged with a heat that set the pulse racing.
Marcus’s palm pressed against the small of her back. His restless tail swept along her leg as he prepared to claim a little more of his reward…
“Emma.”
Corvin’s voice came from outside. Emma jolted, her senses snapping back into place.
She hurried out of Marcus’s arms and straightened her rumpled clothes.
The interruption made Marcus’s happily twitching ears drop flat in an instant. His gray–blue eyes. simmered with irritation at being disturbed, tinged with a hint of wounded resentment.
Even the tail that had been cinched around her waist fell behind him and swept the floor in a foul temper.
Every inch of the wolf said the same thing: leave me alone unless you want trouble.
Corvin ran in without noticing anything amiss and announced cheerfully,
“Ms. Veynar is here. She’s waiting for you in the great hall.”
Only after speaking did Corvin notice Marcus standing nearby with a face as dark as a storm cloud.
His listless ears lay tight against his hair, his pale tail lashed behind him, and his silver–gray stare pinned Corvin in place as if he might spring forward and bite.

Corvin paused, completely baffled.
“Marcus, what’s wrong with you?
“You look awful. Did somebody upset you?”
Marcus nearly ground his teeth.
“Yes. You.”

If Emma had not been standing right there, he would have swatted this oblivious fool across the yard.
“Me?”
Corvin blinked with such innocent confusion that it was almost impressive. “I just got here to find Emma. What did I do to you?”
Emma fought a smile at the sight of him, utterly unaware that he had barged in at the worst possible
moment.
“Corvin, where is Aria?
“I’ll go see her now.”
“She’s in the great hall.”
Corvin answered quickly, then glanced at Marcus, who had “Don’t bother me” written all over his face, and muttered, “What got into him…?”
Still hiding her amusement, Emma tugged lightly on Marcus’s fingers and traced her fingertip across his palm, then reassured him softly,
“All right, don’t be angry. I’ll go talk to Aria, then I’ll come back and keep you company. Okay?”
The warm, delicate touch against his palm eased some of the darkness from Marcus’s face.
He closed his hand around hers. One wolf ear twitched, and he nodded obediently.
“Fine… I’ll wait for you.”
Corvin stared at this clingy, well–behaved version of Marcus until his eyes, nearly popped out of his head.
“Marcus, you…”
He pointed at Marcus, too stunned to get the words out cleanly.
“Since when are you this obedient?
“This is nothing like you!”
Marcus was usually either sprawled somewhere looking half dead or killing someone with a single
