Rafael stood there holding his breath, waiting. Nothing happened. Not so much as a ripple disturbed the space around him. At last, he let the air out in a long sigh.
No wild jumps through the void.
No monstrous force dragging him away.
And, best of all, no sudden plunge into an icy lake or a pack of beasts.
His fear drained away completely. A smug, vicious smile returned to his grotesquely swollen face.
Got him!
This time, I’ve got him!
Apparently, the other little demon was the gifted one. This cub seemed to have none of those freakish powers.
With a helpless baby in his grasp, making Emma do his bidding would be easy.
He still refused to linger. With the younger cub held tight against him, Rafael wavered and dissolved into a wisp of invisible, weightless air.
He slipped silently through the Beast God’s defense system and sped away from the castle with the baby.
This time he did not stop anywhere nearby. Only when he had put a considerable distance behind him did he pause to inspect his captive.
The younger cub was awake now. He gazed up at Rafael, curious rather than tearful.
“Ahh.”
That sweet little sound brought a smile to Rafael’s lips.
It also pulled at every swollen bee sting and embedded cactus spine in his face. Venom burned through the welts, and the sharp pain made him suck in a breath.
His expression contorted, leaving him looking like some hideous, absurd pig-faced monster.
Even that did nothing to extinguish the malice and madness rekindling in his eyes.

His voice was low and rasping. He poked the baby’s soft cheek and sneered, “Behave yourself, though, and I might go a little easier on you.”
The younger cub had no idea what the man holding him was saying.
He was far too young to understand anything that complicated. All he knew was that he had never seen this man before.
He tilted his small head and studied Rafael with large, bright eyes.
Red lumps covered the man’s face and head. Bits of grass and mud clung to his body.
None of it frightened the baby. Instead, he reached up inquisitively and poked one of the bumps on Rafael’s face.
“Aah!”
Pain tore a gasp from Rafael. He raised his arms, about to hurl the cub to the ground.
Then he hesitated. The fall might kill him.
A dead baby would be no use for controlling Emma.
He pinched the younger cub’s cheek hard instead. The flesh refused to give.
“Huh?”
Rafael stared at him. “You’ve awakened an ability too?”
So this was what happened when a human female had cubs. One could travel through the void, and the other had already awakened a power at this tender age.
He gave the baby’s cheek another squeeze. “Too bad yours isn’t nearly as useful as your brother’s.”
The cub neither cried nor struggled, merely regarding him with innocent curiosity. Rafael’s last misgivings disappeared.
A whole night’s worth of humiliation and terror gave way to soaring, overblown confidence.
He tightened his hold on the younger cub and drove his ability to its limit. Like a fleeting gust of wind, he raced still farther from the castle.

With this bargaining chip, Emma would have no choice but to obey.

Lost in the thrill of revenge, Rafael failed to notice the supposedly defenseless baby staring at the biggest, reddest bee sting on his face. After studying it for a while, the cub’s eyes suddenly crinkled with excitement.
With all the curiosity of an infant, the younger cub reached up with both plump, dimpled hands and took remarkably precise aim….
