The shock left the old man reeling. His face went white, and for an instant he could not breathe.

He searched the room in horror. It was terribly quiet, with only the older cub’s slow, steady breathing breaking the silence. The younger one was nowhere to be seen.

“The younger cub is gone!”

Panic sharpened his voice into the piercing cry of an Aurelian. It ripped through the castle’s midnight silence like a thunderclap.

The scream might as well have been a nuclear blast. In an instant, the entire sleeping castle was awake.

Jim materialized in the nursery a heartbeat later.

He looked at the empty crib and asked the cubs’ elderly caretaker, “What happened?”

Drake appeared next, followed by Emma and Lucien.

The others soon crowded in after them.

The old man hurried to explain, “I came to check on the little ones at the usual time. I wanted to make sure they hadn’t kicked off their blankets or woken up hungry.

“The older cub was sound asleep. But when I turned around, the younger one’s stroller was empty!

“I swear I never left the outer room. I didn’t see anyone come in. He simply vanished!”

A dreadful stillness settled over the nursery. The pressure rolling off its occupants made the air almost impossible to breathe.

“The Beast God’s defense system suppresses his ability. If nobody came in, how could he disappear?”

Emma stood beside the older cub’s crib, holding his tiny hand as she asked the question anxiously.

She wanted desperately to stay calm. But her baby was so small, and now he was missing.

She simply could not do it.

“Emma, try not to panic. We’ll find him. I promise.”

Drake comforted her while the others examined the room.

Edric frowned in thought, then said, “Could there be a fault in the Beast God’s defense system?

“Maybe his ability activated.

“He might have transported himself somewhere else in the castle.”

Both cubs could travel through the void. If the defenses had malfunctioned, the younger one might have used his power in his sleep and landed in another room or some corner of the castle.

Lucien’s expression was frighteningly dark. Something dangerous stirred behind his long,

narrow eyes.

The moment he heard his son was missing, he had drawn on their shared bloodline, casting his awareness out like a net to search for that familiar pull.

So far, he had found no trace of the baby’s presence.

He slowly shook his head and said, his voice heavy, “He isn’t in the castle.”

Everyone’s expression changed. Emma’s eyes reddened, and she seized Lucien’s sleeve.

“He isn’t here?

“Then where could he be?

“He’s so little. What if something happens to him?”

Lucien narrowed his eyes and paused, looking distinctly strange.

He closed them again, concentrating on the faint feedback from deep within their bloodline connection. The corners of his mouth twitched despite himself.
