Cedric walked straight over. "Why couldn't you have asked me?"
Hearing the voice behind her, Noelle turned around and saw Cedric approach. There was a dark, unreadable look in his eyes.
She suddenly felt a little embarrassed. Magnus sensed the tension and quickly excused himself. "I'm going to the restroom."
This clearly wasn't the time for him to play the third wheel.
Noelle looked up at Cedric, who was approaching, and repeated her question, "Why did you retire back then?"
"So, you've learned who I am?" Cedric could tell from her question that she'd figured out he used to be part of Team Celestial.
She nodded. "Yeah. I found out just recently that you're King whom everyone used to talk about. Your signature 12-hit combo was…"
She abruptly paused mid-sentence upon realizing she almost said too much. After all, this wasn't her past life.
Cedric pressed, "What about my 12-hit combo?"
Noelle hesitated and calmly replied, "Nothing. Just that it's really difficult to master."
Even with him teaching her back then, it'd taken her a long time to learn it, and he'd complained about her clumsiness more than once.
But in the end, he'd never given up on her.
As Noelle recalled everything he'd done for her in her past life, waves of complicated emotions surged in her chest.
Deep down, she sighed. Humans truly were strange creatures, constantly changing with each passing moment.
Just a while ago, she'd still been resenting him.
Cedric locked his stare on her and asked, "Why did you sigh?"
"I was just remembering how tough it was to learn the 12-hit combo. Can't I sigh about that?"
She met his gaze and added, "Michael told me you retired because of a car accident. Is that true?"
Noelle wasn't used to praising herself like that. It almost felt like she was taking credit for something she hadn't done, and plus, he hadn't cherished her when he had the chance.
Cedric asked, "Did you have dinner at the Liddell residence tonight?"
"Yeah," she replied almost sarcastically.
Cedric frowned. "Did they give you a hard time because of my mom?" He knew all too well what the Liddell family was like.
Noelle smiled. "That wasn't it. It was because of Xenia."
She calmly recounted what had happened, about how Xenia had fallen on purpose. She sounded nonchalant as if it was nothing important.
Yet Cedric felt deeply hurt. He reached out and rested a hand gently on her shoulder. "They're not worth it."
"I know. I was a little disgusted, but I didn't take it to heart. I have more than enough in my life, and I'm content."
Ever since her parents passed away, she hadn't had any biological family left, but she had other things now.
