Noelle was surprised. Had something else happened after she'd left?
Judging from how agitated Donovan looked, the reporters must have said something unpleasant. She had an idea about what had upset them because the reporters had asked her the same questions earlier.
Jeremy lazily replied, "Do I even need to do that? Back when Noelle was the top scorer in the college entrance exam, you guys forced her to repeat a year.
"That news spread like wildfire through her school, and anyone would've heard of it by now." His words hit like a slap in the face.
Jeremy's mention of the incident darkened Donovan's expression further. After all, he was the one who'd forced Noelle to make that humiliating choice.
His face paled terribly. In the end, all he could do was scoff coldly and turn away.
Frank turned to Noelle and looked guilty. "I'm sorry, Noelle. I should've stopped Donovan back then. It must've hurt you a lot."
"I just thought it was absurd back then. Seriously, did you all get hit in the head or something to make such a demand and think I'd agree to it? Where did you get that confidence from?"
Her words made Frank feel like he couldn't breathe, and all he could do was offer a bitter smile. "That's not what I meant."
Jeremy cut in with a cold laugh. "Don't bother explaining. You didn't do anything to stop it either, and that makes you an accomplice. You don't get to play innocent."
Frank immediately fell silent.
Carl suddenly spoke up. "I'm just glad you figured things out, Noelle. You never should've had to sacrifice yourself for our stupidity."
Noelle's voice was laced with scorn as she replied, "Of course, I figured it out, and I won't make the same mistake again."
She refused to waste her breath talking to them any further. Without a word, she turned and walked straight into the courtroom.
She'd spent the past days consumed by the regret that she hadn't gotten rid of that little girl when she'd first learned she'd survived. If she'd taken care of things back then, the Liddell family would have stood no chance of fighting back.
Given how ridiculously stupid the Liddell brothers were, they would have been easily manipulated. None of this would be happening now if Noelle had died.
But Ruth missed her chance, and she was now paying the price.
After glaring at Noelle, she turned to the gallery, where her two daughters were seated. She sneered and snapped at them, "Is this the best lawyer you could get for me?"
She'd recognized the lawyer standing by Noelle's side, and it was clear that her legal counsel didn't even come close.
Samantha replied somewhat helplessly, "This was the best we could afford. We've spent everything we had to get him."
