A fleeting image of Gordon's face popped into Noelle's mind.
No, that didn't seem likely. Gordon was much older, and when it came to fertility, someone young like Justin had the upper hand.
Mia took one of the bracelets from the box. "Let's each wear one. These are limited editions that were co-designed by a famous designer. You can't even buy them here.'
Noelle picked up a bracelet and slipped it onto her wrist. It felt cool and smooth against her skin.
Then, she looked at Mia and announced, "Mrs. Greene will probably testify in court and expose Mrs. Merlock's poisoning scheme."
Mia looked surprised. "Has she found out?"
"Yeah, she figured it out on her own. We couldn't hide it from her."
As Noelle gently stroked the bracelet, Mia replied, "There's nothing to worry about then. Mrs. Greene made that decision herself, and she knows what she's doing."
"I know." Still, Noelle couldn't help feeling a little sorry for Emma. That was what she received after everything she'd done for Ruth, and anyone in her place would be heartbroken.
…
That afternoon, as Noelle headed to class, she learned that Samantha had officially withdrawn from school.
Grace eagerly shared the news, saying, "The business school might look glamorous, but if your family goes bankrupt, they'll throw you out without a second thought."
Other classmates joined in the discussion. "Well, Samantha had it coming for being so arrogant. Back in high school, she picked on someone so badly that they jumped off a building, and nothing ever happened to her. This is karma."
Grace nodded in agreement. "Exactly. It's what the Merlock family deserves."
Noelle listened as everyone recounted Samantha's past arrogance. There was no fear in their voices now.
It was no wonder Samantha withdrew from school. She probably couldn't take the gossip and feared that the people she once bullied might come looking for payback. Honestly, all the Merlocks were the same at their core.
She got into the front passenger seat while Cedric started the car and drove off.
Turning around to look at Emma, she pointed out. "You look much better today."
It was clear that Emma had made an effort to dress neatly and with a light touch of makeup. She looked like she was on the road to recovery.
Emma smoothed her clothes. "Yes, I have to keep looking forward. Otherwise, you kids won't stop worrying about me."
It wasn't until she discovered she'd been poisoned that she realized how much her recent depression, triggered by Ruth's betrayal, had concerned those around her. If she didn't want to burden the people who cared about her, it was time to bring everything to an end.
The car soon arrived at the detention center. Moments later, Ruth was brought out, wearing a smile as she approached Emma.
But when she noticed how healthy and composed Emma looked, her expression distorted slightly. Why did Emma look as if she wasn't sick at all? Something didn't quite add up.
