Mia turned back to look at Samantha and asked, "What is it that you wanna say?"
"Laura wants me to hire a lawyer. According to her, she knows secrets about PZ Group that could help you all."
Upon hearing this, Mia let out a cold laugh. "The exact words from Laura were probably to have you use that information to blackmail me, weren't they?"
"That's not what she meant. She knows that she's messed up, but she was a victim of the PZ Group scheme, too, and had no idea that the company was just a scam."
Samantha had learned about PZ Group's Ponzi scheme online. Back then, she'd been tempted to ask Laura for an investment share, but the latter turned her down with the excuse that she didn't have enough money.
Now, she realized Laura had known the investments were shady and kept her out of it, so that was how she'd managed to escape the ordeal. In some way, that was how the Merlocks had avoided getting swindled out of their family's last savings.
And because of that, Samantha had come to the detention center to visit Laura. She couldn't just abandon the latter, regardless of what had happened.
Mia bluntly asked, "So what does Laura know?"
"How much are you willing to pay for it?"
Mia frowned. "You should tell me first. How do I know if what you're offering is even worth any money?"
"You have to promise that if you find out, you won't back out and refuse to pay. Laura knows quite a few secrets, and I can give them all to you when the time comes."
Now, Samantha knew all too well that money was everything.
Mia nodded. "I'm not stingy enough to cheat you over a small sum, so go on and talk."
