"This is all Noelle's fault! She was disrespectful to Mrs. Greene Senior and said things that made her sick with anger, yet you still treat Noelle so well. Look at what happened!
"She turned around and made Mrs. Greene Senior so mad that she had to be rushed into treatment. Laura used to take such good care of Mrs. Greene Senior."
Ruth spared no effort in smearing Noelle's name. Noelle looked at Emma in guilt. "I didn't mean to."
Emma had an ugly expression. "Noelle, can I know what you said to Mrs. Greene Senior that made her so upset she had to be rescued?"
Anastasia was kind and gentle. She was the best mother-in-law Emma had ever met, so the latter wished to know why Noelle had said something so hurtful.
Hearing her accusatory tone, Noelle felt as if her chest was suffocatingly stuffed, which made it hard to breathe. After a brief silence, she answered, "Mrs. Greene Senior told me to leave Cedric."
To Noelle, this wasn't surprising at all. Emma was momentarily speechless, while Ruth was both shocked and delighted. She covered her mouth and turned to Emma.
"See? What did I tell you? Mrs. Greene Senior has the sharpest judgment and knows they aren't meant for each other. Noelle most likely refused to comply and defied her, so she had to be rushed into rescue in the middle of the night."
Noelle's eyes turned slightly red. "I'm sorry, Mrs. Greene. I shouldn't have said anything so offensive."
Emma wiped away her tears. "You're a good child, but since Mrs. Greene Senior has spoken, we should respect her wishes, shouldn't we?"
It was the gravely ill Anastasia who'd said the words no one else would and ended up playing the villain.
Noelle lowered her gaze and forced a difficult "Yes."
That was when the balance in her heart began to tip. She knew how much Anastasia meant to Cedric, and she could never bear to have him lose the most important person in his life, though she didn't want to let go at all.
