The Merlock family business had declined significantly, and former connections no longer showed them any respect. That was why Samantha ended up wearing an ankle monitor.
Laura continued, "Aren't you still in contact with Xenia, the adopted daughter of the Liddells? Ask her about the Liddell family's AI project and see how it's progressing."
"Laura, didn't you mention wanting to work with the Greene family?"
"They rejected us." Laura's eyes turned slightly red as she continued, "He rejected the Merlock family's involvement to protect Noelle."
Something like that would have never happened in the past. Laura quickly recollected herself and declared, "But the Merlock family will never give up this piece of pie."
She wouldn't, either.
…
Noelle walked into the venue and saw Cedric leaning back in his seat. He was so good-looking that people around him were all trying to curry favor with him. That was when Noelle truly felt how far apart their worlds were.
Instead of walking over, she turned and headed toward Scott, where a few journalism students gathered. When she arrived, everyone turned to look at her. They'd just been talking about Noelle and were envious that she was already the senior executive of a company.
Scott asked, "Noelle, do you need something?"
"Actually, yes. I have a few things I'd like to ask the head of the Journalism Club. There's a post on the campus forum spreading a rumor that I'm a sugar baby."
She traced the post's ID and learned that Johnny Stanton, the head of the Journalism Club, had published it.
Johnny was a young man with glasses and a scholarly appearance. He got up and walked toward Noelle. "What are you trying to say?"
"What I'm saying is that I'm doing well in my business. I'm not short on money, and I don't need to rely on a man. As a journalism student, you should know better than to judge ladies with prejudice.
"Just because a lady carries a luxury handbag and drives a fancy car doesn't mean she's a sugar baby. That's too narrow-minded."
