Cedric and Noelle continued staying shamelessly at the Cantrell residence.
Bold as ever, Cedric even had the Cantrells serve them fruit and snacks.
To be honest, Noelle couldn't have pulled off such calmness on her own. If it weren't for Cedric by her side, she definitely wouldn't have been this composed.
It wasn't until almost evening that Mia finally came downstairs.
The moment Noelle saw her, her eyes turned red, and she rushed over. "Are you okay?"
"I'm fine." Mia nodded her head, but her eyes reddened too.
Though she'd been pretending to be calm, her defenses crumbled the moment she saw her best friend, and all the pent-up emotions came flooding out.
Noelle hugged her tightly. "It's okay now. I'll take you away."
Mia froze. She glanced at Cedric sitting on the couch and figured Noelle had probably managed to come here thanks to him.
Unfortunately, not everything was under her control. She hadn't managed to secure what her dad had left her.
Just then, Donovan walked over. "Mia, just say the word if you need anything from me. I'll take care of you for the rest of my life."
Once she saw him, she immediately hid behind Noelle, and her expression darkened. "I don't need anything from you. Go away."
She used to think Donovan was a gentleman, not like the other blind dates who leered at her and tried to get handsy. Now, she realized even if he wasn't sleazy, he was still despicable.
Donovan softened his tone and said, "I know you're mad now, but I swear I'll take good care of you in the future."
Noelle stepped forward to shove him away. "Mia doesn't need you taking care of her or anything. Do you think she's crippled or something?"
Caught off guard, he stumbled back two steps. His tone soured once he saw Noelle. "She's your sister-in-law. Now, take care of her."
Salena had long taken it upon herself to get Mia a fiancé, but if she picked someone too lowly, it would make them a laughingstock in their circle. While she cared about her ego, she was unwilling to give up the inheritance under Mia's name, so she'd been carefully screening suitors.
Yet, Mia never appreciated her efforts. Even when they needed her help right now, she refused.
That was why Salena finally lost patience and used drastic measures. After all, the money belonged to the Cantrell family, and since Mia would get married sooner or later, they might as well use it now.
Noelle sneered. "You're not even her legal guardian, Mrs. Cantrell. What right do you have to do this?"
"This is a Cantrell family matter. What business is it of yours?" Salena glared at Noelle in rage. If Cedric weren't backing Noelle, she'd have taught Noelle a lesson.
Yet, she could only dream about it. There was nothing she could actually do.
Donovan looked at Mia and said, "I know you need time to think, and I'll give you that. One day, you'll realize I'm most suited for you."
Though he'd gotten her money through despicable means, he vowed to take responsibility for taking care of her.
