Cedric knew that if he were to leave now, there would be no going back.
Noelle noticed the look on his face and lowered her gaze to avoid his eyes. One of them was staring hopefully at the other while the other was stubbornly looking away. Neither of them backed down.
A ticklish feeling rose up in Cedric's throat once more. He did not want to show any weakness in front of Noelle, so he stood up and left without a word.
The light in her eyes dimmed as she watched him suddenly turn around and leave. It was just as she had expected. If she did not give in to him, he would leave.
Cedric no longer needed to keep up with the act in front of her anymore. There was no longer any need to play pretend.
Her lips curled into a half-smile in self-mockery. She did not want to see him again for the rest of her life.
…
Meanwhile, Cedric rushed out of the apartment in a panic, not even bothering to put on his shoes. He coughed violently for a very long time, curling up and leaning against the wall beside the door.
He sat disheveled at the doorway, looking back at the closed door behind him. His eyes drooped down, looking dejected like those of an abandoned pet.
Not long after, the elevator doors opened to a cleaning lady coming upstairs to do her rounds. She was startled to find a grown man sitting at the doorway.
When she finished cleaning up the area, she cautiously approached Cedric and asked, "Sir? Are you okay?"
But Cedric seemed as if he could not hear her. He sat still at the doorway, and his side profile indicated a gloomy expression that made it hard for anyone to approach.
The cleaning lady got back in the elevator and went to report the situation to the property manager. "There's a man sitting outside the door of Unit 3 on the 16th floor. I tried to talk to him, but he didn't respond.
"He seemed like someone you wouldn't want to mess with. Could he be harassing a resident or something?"
The property manager replied, "I'll give the resident a call and check on things."
They were a high-end residential apartment after all. If anything were to go wrong, the company would be held liable.
Noelle was soon awakened by a phone call. She took a look at the number and saw that it was a stranger's number.
She answered the call and was greeted by the voice of a middle-aged man. "Hello, is this Ms. Liddell? I'm calling from the property management office."
"Yes, I am. Is something the matter?"
"The cleaning lady saw a man sitting at your door. Do you know him? If he's harassing you, we can send security up right away."
Noelle was confused by the question and by the fact that someone was outside her door.
She wondered if it was Cedric, but she felt that it should not likely be the case.
