Chapter 177 The Million-Dollar Question

Nella then looked at Alfred and said, “The subway entrance is right over there. It goes straight to Apex Medical, so no need to drive me.”
As she spoke, she waved at Alfred and was about to cross the street toward the subway entrance.
But before she could take a step, Alfred’s long arm reached out and blocked her path.
He didn’t know if it was because of what Regis had said earlier about finding Nella another man to marry, but Alfred felt restless for no clear reason.
He stood there with his hands on his hips, irritated, with a lot he wanted to say but no idea where to start.
Especially when he saw Nella looking at him with calm, detached indifference, every word that reached his lips got shoved back down his throat.
At that moment, his irritation hit its peak.
He took a deep breath, forcing himself to rein in the surge of anger in his chest, and looked away.
“Now that Grandpa’s gone, you can’t even be bothered to pretend with me anymore?”
Nella looked confused.
So he’s been stewing in front of me all this time just to say that?
Alfred saw the complicated look in Nella’s eyes and grew even more irritated.
Just when Nella thought he was about to lose his temper at her, he suddenly lowered his head, his tone softening.
“Didn’t you notice I barely ate at lunch?”
Nella asked, “Wasn’t it because you weren’t hungry?”
She spoke with a completely baffled expression.
Alfred was speechless.
What should I do?
If I beat this woman up right now, would that count as domestic violence?
God, she’s infuriating!
He clenched his jaw, staring at her with a dark look.
“A lot of those dishes had things I don’t like.”
Nella didn’t reply.
“Nella, you used to remember. Did you forget on purpose today?”

He finally asked it.
His hoarse voice carried a faint hint of hurt.
Nella fell silent at his words.
She hadn’t forgotten Alfred’s dislikes.
Before, it was because she cared, and because she had a good memory.
Now, it was only because she had a good memory.

The reason she hadn’t paid attention to Alfred’s dislikes today was that she’d completely forgotten about him at the time. She’d been focused entirely on Regis.
Seeing Nella stay silent, Alfred took it as confirmation.
He looked even more aggrieved, the corners of his eyes tinged faintly red.
“So you really don’t take anything about me to heart.”
Nella couldn’t be bothered to explain such an insignificant matter to him and simply said, “Then remember it yourself next time. You can’t rely on others forever. You’re the only one you can really count on.”
Great life advice, sure-but it only ticked Alfred off more.
“Alright. Go back to work. I need to head back to the hospital too.”
Nella once again moved to walk toward the subway entrance.
This time, Alfred didn’t stop her. He just stared at her for several seconds before suddenly asking, “Do you want a divorce?”
That single sentence made Nella stop in her tracks.
She looked up at him. “You’re agreeing?”
Only at moments like this did Alfred see a glimmer of light in Nella’s usually calm, unruffled eyes.
His jaw tightened unconsciously.
He lowered his head, looking into her gaze, and said hoarsely, “You should understand that even though we signed that agreement, it was only a private arrangement between the two of us.”
