Chapter 209 Tears for Another

Alfred was stunned because of the tears welling up in Nella’s eyes and the hatred she was showing him.
Shock and pain gathered together in his eyes.
Even when he’d left her alone in Glacieroth, she hadn’t shed a single tear in front of him, nor complained
once.
Even when he chose Zoey again and again, she’d never shouted at him like this.
Yet now, she was crying over that pretty boy, and just because he’d mocked that man once, she was looking at him with hatred.
She actually hates me because of a side piece?
He watched the tears keep spilling from her eyes, watched her wipe them away again and again, only for them to fall again, even harder each time.
Alfred felt a bitter, aching pain spread through his chest.
He stared at Nella, lips trembling slightly, his eyes filled with deep loneliness and hurt.
“You like him that much?”
His hoarse voice carried traces of sadness and unwillingness.
Alfred asked.
“Yes. I like him. I love him!”
The panic Nella had been suppressing turned into anger, which she vented straight at Alfred.
“Are you done asking? If you are, then get out of my face!”
It wasn’t just Alfred who had never seen the usually composed Nella lose control like this. Even Mason, who’d come along to watch the show, was surprised by Nella’s emotional breakdown.
But he didn’t do anything. He just kept his hands in his coat pockets, leaned against the wall, and watched lazily.
Jasmine shot him a cold look and asked in a low voice, “What are you doing here again?”
Mason lifted his chin and pointed in Alfred’s direction. “Came to watch the clown show.”
Then he realized his words sounded wrong and hurried to add before Jasmine could scowl.
“I mean, Alfred’s the clown.”
Jasmine gave him a look full of disgust, then turned to Alfred again.
Ugh.

He’s even more annoying.
After venting, Nella didn’t look at Alfred again.
Instead, she lowered her head and refreshed the group chats once more.
Just then, she heard a faint whimper.
Nella’s fingers froze on the screen, and she glanced toward where the sound had come from.
But it had only sounded once, then vanished.

She even wondered if that whimper had just been her imagination, brought on by how worried she was about Marshal.
Even so, clinging to that tiny shred of hope, she called out twice.
“Marshal? Marshal? Are you here? Can you answer me again?”
“Whine… whine…”
The sound was short, but it rang out twice in a row.
The dim light in Nella’s eyes suddenly flared.
This time, she heard it clearly.
Her face lit up with instant joy.
She turned to Jasmine, so excited her words tumbled over each other.
“Did you hear that? That was Marshal, right? It has to be Marshal. He must’ve heard me calling him.”
As she spoke, she called out several more times, but Marshal’s voice was gone again.
Jasmine was standing a bit farther away and hadn’t heard it.
Seeing Nella like this, she thought Nella had imagined it in her dazed state,
“Nella, don’t do this. Calm down. We’ll find Marshal.”
They’d searched this spot many times already. It was just a single narrow alley, visible end to end at a glance. Marshal couldn’t possibly be here.
