Chapter 232 Content Dog
Marshal lay flat on his back in the dog bed, belly up and completely stuffed.
He looked so relaxed, like nothing from last night had even left a mark.
The pressure in Nella’s chest finally loosened a bit.
She tapped out a short thank-you and sent it to Alfred.

Her screen showed the “typing…” bubble at the top. But after a long wait, all she got back was: “Don’t thank me.”
She didn’t reply. She kept staring at the screen, unsure what to say. She picked the phone up again, thinking about asking if he’d seen the abuse video.
But in the end, she just set it down.
Alfred had been watching his screen too. When no follow-up message came, disappointment hit hard.
He reached out, ran his hand over Marshal’s head, and sighed.
“Your sister’s giving me the cold shoulder.”
Marshal didn’t understand him, but he caught the sadness in Alfred’s voice. He licked the back of his hand in response.
Alfred stayed seated on the soft rug beside him. He kept staring at the screen. No reply.
He finally opened their chat again and scrolled through their old conversations.
She used to talk to him so much more. Way more than she did now.
Their routine hadn’t changed. So why did she suddenly care so much about the Zoey stuff?
Could it really be just because he hadn’t been there for a couple of weeks?
He didn’t know. All he felt was this heavy, empty pressure in his chest that left him lost.
That was when Maisie opened the door.
She walked in and saw Alfred sitting cross-legged on the floor, phone in one hand and stroking Marshal with the other. Her eyes twitched slightly in surprise.
She’d never seen Alfred look this disheveled before.
He actually looked like a man waiting for a text from his wife.
Well, well.
Back when that clingy Mack girl was playing the “big brother” card, he hadn’t considered how much his wife might hate that.

And now he was cozying up to the dog? What good was that supposed to do?
She said nothing. Just shook her head to herself.
“Sir.”
Despite all the mental commentary, her tone stayed perfectly composed. She looked every bit the elite executive assistant she was.
Her face didn’t show a trace of judgment.
Alfred pulled himself out of his thoughts. He cleared the look from his face, handed Marshal a ball, and stood up.
“Sir, the admin team submitted two weekend retreat proposals. Please take a look.”
“Leave them.”
“Yes, sir.”
She set the folders down, gave a respectful nod, and walked out.
Alfred’s eyes landed on the two documents.
He picked up the one labeled “Snowfield Retreat Plan.”
The place was near Apex, out west. It was the biggest snow park in the country. Every facility was top-tier, and the service was designed for all types of guests.
One section was built just for pets.
If they held the retreat there, Nella wouldn’t have to leave Marshal behind. She could bring him and have a dedicated staff member care for him the entire time.
This park was way bigger than the one in Skiland. It was also way more fun.
