No Renewal My Contract Husband (Nella and Alfred) novel Chapter 234

Chapter 234 Send the Pup Home

When the elevator chimed, Alfred turned and gave her a soft, welcoming smile.

“You’re back.”

Marshal’s eyes lit up as soon as he saw her. He wriggled in Alfred’s arms, eager to break free.

“Easy, Marshal. Don’t move.”

Alfred’s voice dropped even gentler.

The same man who used to hate anything furry now bent down and kissed Marshal lightly on the head.

Nella was stunned. She blinked at him, caught off guard.

Worried Marshal might hurt his ribs if he kept squirming, she quickly stepped forward.

“Hold still. Let me unlock the door first.”

Marshal understood her tone. He immediately settled back into Alfred’s arms.

Nella walked to the door and opened it. She let Alfred walk inside.

Once inside, Alfred gently lowered Marshal into his bed. He looked at Nella with something to say, but stopped himself short.

Nella handed him a glass of water and thanked him again.

“Thanks for taking care of Marshal today.”

Alfred stared at her for a few seconds. His voice came out low and heavy.

“Why do you always talk to me like we’re strangers?”

The more polite she acted, the more he felt her slipping away from him.

The tight, aching pressure in his chest wouldn’t let up.

Nella glanced down slightly. “You helped with Marshal. Saying thank you is the least I can do.”

“But we’re married. Isn’t marriage supposed to be about backing each other up?”

His eyes stayed locked on her. His voice stayed quiet.

Backing each other up. Sticking together.

Nella repeated those words in her head. They felt bitter,

If she kept responding, the conversation would circle back to one thing-whether they were still really a couple.

So she didn’t say anything. She walked over and sat on the couch.

#Frushed

Silence blanketed the room.

Only the soft squeak of Marshal chewing his toy broke the quiet.

“Uh…”

Nella finally spoke. Her voice was tight with awkwardness.

“Yeah?”

Alfred turned to her.

“You haven’t had dinner, have you?” Nella asked.

A faint spark lit Alfred’s eyes. He shook his head.

“No. I brought Marshal here right after work. Traffic was a mess. I haven’t eaten yet.”

His tone was soft. There was a little hope in it. Maybe even a hint of vulnerability.

Nella didn’t pause. “Then you should get going. I ate at the hospital. There’s nothing here to eat anyway.”

Her voice was clipped. A little too quick.

The curve at Alfred’s lips froze. The light in his eyes vanished.

He really thought she was inviting him to stay for dinner.

Turned out she was just trying to get rid of him nicely.

He stared at her, then gave a tired, slanted smile.

“So you’re really kicking me out.”

Nella’s mouth twitched into an awkward smile. She scrambled for a gentler way to put it.

“There’s no food here. I don’t want you going home hungry.”

She did want him to leave.

But after everything he’d done with Marshal today, she couldn’t bring herself to say it straight.
