Chapter 239 Curious Girl

The girl’s soft little voice snapped Alfred out of his head.

Her dad tensed up fast. He looked spooked as he thought she’d just offended Alfred, and rushed to fix it.

“Honey, people don’t give birth to puppies. That’s not something we can do.”

He turned to Alfred right after that. “Mr. Keywood, I’m really sorry. She didn’t mean it.”

Alfred smiled at the kid.

“It’s all good. I didn’t have him myself, but he’s still my little guy.”

Nella had never heard Alfred talk that way to anyone before.

Maybe he sounded like that with Zoey when no one else was around. But she’d never actually seen it.

Right now, though, that warmth felt real. You could almost reach out and touch it.

He didn’t look like the same man who always felt a thousand miles away. The kind of guy who looked like he was born without warmth in his body.

He crouched a little to meet the girl’s eyes. His cold stare, the one that always came with a sheet of frost, turned soft.

“What about the baby you and your wife had?”

Her question was full of sweetness and curiosity.

Nella flinched the second she heard it. Her face locked up.

Alfred froze, too. The smile that had just started to form in his eyes vanished.

He didn’t glance her way. He looked rattled. Totally caught off guard.

That simple question cut him open.

It reminded him how badly he’d handled those three years.

The man saw Alfred’s face and freaked out.

“Sweetie, they’re still young. They’ll have a baby someday. That’s enough questions.”

Then he looked at both of them.

“Mr. and Mrs. Keywood, it’s really been nice seeing you. Take care!”

He didn’t wait for the elevator to reach their floor. He scooped up his daughter and took off like the place

was on fire.

He looked like he thought Alfred might blow up and come after his kid.

Chapter 239 Curious Girl

The elevator kept moving down. Alfred clenched his jaw. His whole body looked tight.

A few seconds passed. Then Nella heard him speak behind her. His voice was low and rough. “Sorry”

She blinked.

“What?”

She turned around and looked at him. She had no idea why he was apologizing.

He tried to smile, but it didn’t land. He looked stuck, like he had no idea how to explain himself.

The elevator stopped at the garage level. She walked out first.

Then she heard his voice again. “Nella.”

She turned back.

He stepped up beside her. His lips were tight. His voice dropped.

“If I hadn’t spoiled Zoey so much … do you think maybe we’d have a kid by now?”

That question took everything he had.

Maybe it was a test. Or maybe he just needed to know if he had even a fraction of a chance left.

Nella paused for a second. Then she gave him a tiny smile, as if it meant nothing.

“No shot.”

Her voice was sharp and sure. “There wasn’t a baby clause in that contract.”

Contract.

Just hearing the word made his chest squeeze hard.
