When Zoey went home, this was the scene she walked into.

“What are you doing?” she shouted. “What crime did my mom commit? Why are you treating her like this?”

Zoey rushed in front of the police officers and demanded an answer.

“Mrs. Mack is suspected of deliberately damaging someone else’s property,” one officer said calmly. “If you have objections, bring a lawyer to the station. Do not interfere with our work.”

Before Zoey could say anything else, they pushed Eileen-who was crying, struggling, and yelling-into the police car and drove away.

Zoey stood frozen at the doorway, staring in shock as her mother was taken away. It took several seconds before reality hit her.

Suddenly, she remembered what had happened that afternoon. She had gone to Nella and proudly bragged to her that Alfred had helped remove all the videos about her mother from the internet.

“This must be that bitch’s doing,” Zoey muttered through clenched teeth. “She couldn’t stand Alfred being good to me, so she called the police on purpose.”

Her face turned dark with anger.

She grabbed her phone and instinctively tried to call Alfred for help.

But the moment the call connected, a cold automated voice informed her that the number had been blocked. Alfred had blocked her.

That truth made Zoey hate Nella even more.

She refused to give up. She switched to another phone and dialed again.

Last Call Bar: the bar was loud and busy.

“Something’s clearly wrong with Alfred,” Archie whispered to Ryan. “If he’s got something on his mind, drinking like this won’t fix it.”

After they left this bar last time, Archie had gone home and told Danielle about the whole misunderstanding, about Nella supposedly keeping a puppy. Danielle had been mocking him

nonstop.

She even said that Alfred’s behavior toward Zoey made him look more like the other man than

“If I were Nella,” Danielle had said, “I’d keep one too. You can’t have a double standard.”

That comment had bothered Archie for a long time. He had even wondered if Danielle was upset with him.

Later, when he found out that Nella was actually raising a real puppy, Daniella’s words came back to him again.

You can’t have a double standard.

If Alfred could keep someone on the side, then Nella could have a lover herself.

Still, after the misunderstanding was cleared up, Alfred had seemed genuinely happy.

He even showed up everywhere with his brother-in-law like he was proud of it. So why did he look like this today?

“Nella won’t let me take care of Marshal anymore,” Alfred said hoarsely.

He slammed the bottle down hard on the table.

“She won’t let you raise Marshal?” Archie blinked.

“That’s it?”

So what if she didn’t let him? Was it really worth drinking himself into misery?

Of course, Archie only complained in his head.

Given Alfred’s lost expression, Archie was fairly certain that making a joke would be risky.

Ryan misunderstood the situation completely.

you like dogs that much?” Ryan said seriously. “That’s no big deal. If Nella won’t let you keep Marshal, you can take care of Brutus for a few days. Brutus is adorable too.”

Archie nodded eagerly. “Yeah, yeah. My sister loves Brutus. If Ryan’s willing to lend him to you, that means you’re really important to him.”

“Exactly,” Ryan agreed, nodding hard.

The two of them even clapped hands in agreement.

Mason was speechless.
