“Nella, even if you’re not on duty, could you still come and see Alfred?”

He glanced at the man on the bed with sympathy. Alfred was lying there with his eyes open, staring at nothing.

“No,” Nella replied from the other end of the phone. Her voice was cool and firm.

“I’m not a stomach specialist. I don’t know much about his condition. If there’s nothing else, I’m going back to sleep.”

Her words went straight into Alfred’s ears. The last bit of light in his

faded completely.

“Nella-”

Ryan hadn’t finished speaking before the call ended.

Ryan looked awkward. He exchanged a glance with the others in the room, then looked back at Alfred, who looked like he was about to fall apart.

“Alfred, Nella… she was probably just woken up by my call,” Ryan said gently.

“She might be in a bad mood. She didn’t refuse to come and see you.”

Great. That helped nothing.

Alfred looked like he might cry.

Ryan saw Alfred’s pale face and those empty, lifeless eyes. He opened his mouth, then closed it again. He didn’t say another word.

“Forget it,” Alfred said quietly. “It’s the middle of the night. Don’t bother her.”

He lay there, his chest aching sharply.

So much so that even his bleeding stomach didn’t hurt as much anymore.

Nella, you’re so cruel to me.

“Alfred-”

“You should all go home,” Alfred cut them off.

Mason walked over and tucked the blanket around Alfred, then added bluntly, “Don’t look like all hope has been lost. Nella won’t feel sorry for you.”

He kept going, without mercy.

“A few days ago, I saw a video online. A woman hung herself at home. Her husband thought she was just swinging. You get what I’m saying?”

As he spoke, he smoothed the blanket again, every word hitting hard.

“That’s you right now. Nella doesn’t love you. You can wreck yourself all you want, and she’ll just think you’re making a scene.”

“Mason, stop it,” Archie snapped. “Can’t you see Alfred’s already breaking?”

“Alright, alright. We’re leaving,” Mason said. “Rest well.”

The next morning.

Early in the day, Sergio showed up at Alfred’s hospital room, holding a laptop and several important files.

“Mr. Keywood, should we cancel the morning meeting?” Sergio asked. “Your health comes first.”

“No need,” Alfred rejected him calmly.

His eyes drifted toward the door again and again, as if he were waiting for someone.

After a moment, he asked, “Who is taking care of Marshal today?”

“Huh?” Sergio froze for a second.

“You’re hospitalized, so no one picked up Mr. Marshal. Mrs. Keywood is probably taking care of him herself.”

Alfred frowned at this. “She has work. How can she take Marshal with her?”

“Well, I’m not sure,” Sergio said, stuck.

Alfred barely touched his breakfast. He got out of bed, opened the hospital room door, and walked out.
