“Don’t rush it. Let’s wait a little longer. She might have been held up by something else. She was supposed to be on duty today, but a few days ago she switched shifts with a coworker. I’m sure
it was so she could celebrate your birthday with you.”
The moment Alfred heard that, the dull light in his eyes came back on.
“Really?”
The corners of his mouth, which had been drooping, slowly lifted.
“Oh-wait!”
Ryan suddenly shouted and slapped his forehead.
“Look at my memory.”
He leaned closer to Alfred and said in a low voice, “Yesterday, Nella came to my shop to custom-order a fountain pen. She even asked the staff to engrave the name ‘Keywood’ on it. It’s obviously a birthday gift for you.”
“She ordered a pen for me yesterday?”
The joy in Alfred’s eyes was impossible to hide, though he tried to look calm.
He lowered his gaze, then looked back up at Ryan, pretending to be steady.
The way he was clearly excited but forcing himself to stay composed was honestly a little funny.
“I wouldn’t lie to you,” Ryan said quickly. “I was in the shop myself. I heard her tell the staff to engrave ‘Keywood’ on the pen. If it’s not for you, who else could it be for?”
Then Ryan smiled proudly and added, “And hey, I even had the craftsman make a matching couple’s pen. I had ‘Milo’ engraved on it. I was going to surprise you, but seeing how crushed you looked just now, I couldn’t take it anymore and decided to tell you.”
The gloom in Alfred’s heart lifted at once.
Even his movements became lighter.
“That sports car you were looking at,” Alfred said casually, “I’ll buy it for you.”

From far away, she saw Wesley walking toward them, pushing a suitcase with a large backpack on his shoulders.
He spotted her too, took off his sunglasses, and waved.
“Dr. Keywood.”
Nella pushed Marshal forward.
“It’s been a long time.”
Wesley raised an eyebrow. “So polite? You’re not calling me ‘Your Majesty’ anymore?”
Nella froze for a second, then remembered the joking message she had sent him earlier about his “coronation.” She laughed.
“Come on. Let’s go to the hotel first. I booked a restaurant. After you get some rest, I’ll take you out to eat.”
“Sounds good,” Wesley said with a grin. “I won’t hold back, then.”
He nodded, then reached out and gently rubbed Marshal’s head.
“Marshal, say hi to your big brother.”
Marshal lifted his round, confused eyes and looked at Wesley. After a second, as if he understood, his little mouth curved into a tiny smile.
As soon as Nella and Wesley got into the car, a soft meowing sound came from nearby.
Nella paused and looked in surprise at the man in the passenger seat.
“You have a cat now?”
She watched as Wesley took off his backpack. Inside lay a white Devon Rex cat, wearing a small pearl necklace.
Wesley lifted the cat out, gently touched her head, then held her paw and waved it at Nella.

“Sunny,” he said, smiling. “Say hello to your big sister.”
The kitten seemed to understand and let out a soft meow.
The gentle, baby-like sound melted Nella’s heart completely.
