His voice was low and hoarse, wrapped in chill. The temperature in the room seemed to drop

Ryan quickly pulled his phone back and stuffed it into his pocket. He shook his head again and again.

“It’s nothing, Alfred. You heard wrong.”

He avoided Alfred’s eyes, but he could still feel that sharp stare on him. It made him extremely uncomfortable.

Archie, who was sitting beside Alfred, didn’t dare say another word. He quietly reached for the phone on the table, trying to put it away.

The next second, a long hand grabbed the phone.

Alfred held it tightly in his palm. “Unlock it.”

“Alfred…”

“Unlock it!”

His voice dropped an octave colder.

Archie didn’t dare to refuse. He quickly unlocked the phone.

When Alfred saw the photos Zoey had sent-pictures of Nella being extremely close with a strange man-his face turned terrifyingly pale.

“A-Alfred,” Archie stammered. “Nella isn’t that kind of person. There must be some misunderstanding.”

Alfred said nothing. He stared at the photos without blinking.

Nella had never looked this relaxed in front of him.

“Maybe…” Archie said carefully, worry all over his face. “You should call Nella and ask her directly. Don’t let a misunderstanding ruin your relationship.”

He kept glancing at his phone, feeling like Alfred might crush it at any moment, as if it were

Nella herself.

“That’s right,” Claire added more bluntly. “You know Zoey. She lives for stirring up trouble. She’d love nothing more than for you and Nella to fight so she can jump in.

“Instead of sulking here,” she continued, “you should just ask Nella directly. It’s better for both of you.”

Just when everyone thought Alfred was about to lose his temper, he suddenly calmed down.

He handed the phone back to Archie and gestured for everyone to sit.

“Let’s eat,” he said. “The food’s getting cold.”

“And Nella?” someone asked.

“She’s just having dinner with a friend,” Alfred cut in flatly. “There’s nothing to make a fuss about.”
