Chapter 31 An Unexpected Reunion

“Is it you?”

Lyra spoke first.

“Dr. Moore?”

Nella asked in surprise.

The specialist she had booked was Lyra Moore, a well known psychologist in the field.

Nella had expected someone a little older. She never imagined it would be the young woman who had been sitting next to her on the plane that day.

Lyra nodded. “Yes, it’s me. Please have a seat.”

Since she recognized Nella, she also understood why Nella was here.

“I…”

Nella had prepared herself to see a therapist, but now that she was sitting face to face, she did not know where to begin.

“It’s fine. Let’s just talk,” Lyra said gently. “Like we did on the plane. You can tell me anything you want.”

Lyra’s voice was soft and warm, like a spring breeze. Paired with her friendly, harmless looking smile, it made Nella relax without even realizing it.

Nella told Lyra about the avalanche that day. She stayed mostly calm while speaking, though there was still a slight tremble in her voice.

For a professional like Lyra, trauma stress like this was not difficult to identify.

But Nella’s problem went deeper.

“So you’re saying that since that incident, whenever you see your husband, you feel irritated and instinctively push him away?” Lyra asked.

Nella did not hide anything. She nodded seriously.

“Yes. I know this reaction isn’t normal, so…”

“No, there’s nothing wrong with it,” Lyra interrupted.

“Maybe you didn’t notice, but when you talk about the avalanche itself, your emotions stay fairly steady. The real trigger of your stress is your husband. Because he matters so much to you, he became the source of this condition. When you see him, you are reminded of the avalanche, of the fear and despair you felt when you were left buried under the snow.”

Lyra’s words hit straight to the point. Nella froze and did not speak for a long time.

Lyra did not rush her. She simply sat there quietly and waited.

After who knew how long, Nella finally heard her own hoarse voice. “Then what should I do?”

“Face that source with a calm mindset,” Lyra replied. “Then, at the right time, put some distance between yourself and it. Things will slowly get better.”

At first, Nella felt Lyra’s advice sounded simple and vague. She did not know how to act on it.

But one thing felt true. Alfred was the real source of her stress.

It was her attachment to Alfred that had trapped her in that day of the avalanche.

She talked with Lyra for a while longer and felt the heavy weight in her chest ease quite a bit.

After that, Lyra prescribed some supportive medication. Nella then left the office.

She had not walked far when a surprised voice called out behind her.

“Nella?”

The familiar voice made her frown.

Still, out of politeness, she turned around.

Sure enough, a few steps away, Alfred was standing beside Zoey. Alfred was holding a bag of medicine and looking at her with a complicated expression.

Nella instinctively hid her own medicine behind her back. Before she could say anything, Zoey hurried over, grabbed her hand, and spoke.
