Alfred’s brows pulled together. He looked like he couldn’t get the words out. He inhaled deeply, then finally forced it.
“The message you sent me … the one begging for help … Zoey was the one who texted you She used my phone.”
His head dropped right after. His voice trembled.
back.
“She said her battery died. Asked to use mine to take some pictures. I handed it over without thinking.”
He kept his eyes on the table. His voice got weaker with every word.
Nella didn’t move. That vicious reply he’d supposedly sent came rushing back.
It had shattered her. In that moment, everything she’d done for the past ten years felt like a complete joke.
Even if she hadn’t been his wife-even if they’d just been acquaintances-Alfred shouldn’t have treated her like that.
He would’ve had to absolutely despise her to turn his back on her when she was dying.
She spiraled hard after that. No matter how many times she turned it over in her head, she couldn’t figure out how she had messed up so badly that he’d treat her worse than a stranger.
But on the day of the company retreat, she woke up in the hospital. Alfred had been there. He’d apologized over and over again. He told her he didn’t even know about the avalanche.
That was when it first clicked. Something inside her finally snapped loose.
Maybe Alfred never loved her, but maybe chasing after him for ten years hadn’t been that pathetic after all.
That was why she’d said everything she needed to say that day. She had wanted a clean goodbye.
“Yeah. I figured.”
Her voice was calm and steady.
Alfred froze. A flicker of hope lit up in his eyes. “So … can I fix it? Just once?”

That flicker went out the moment she answered.
“I’m not interested.”
All she wanted now was to get through the rest of their contract and divorce him.
“Nella…”
His tone turned urgent. But she raised her hand to stop him.
“If that’s all you came to explain, then you’re late. I figured it out the day of the retreat.”
She didn’t care how desperate he looked. She kept going.
“You didn’t end the call. You didn’t send the message. I know. But what difference does that make?”
She stared at him while confusion clouded his face. Then she laid it out.
“She only got your phone because you handed it over. She only had the chance to text me because you let her. And she only had the guts to come for me because you gave her permission.”
Alfred sat there. Completely silent.
“I never said a word because we had a deal. I had no right to question you. But I wasn’t obligated to accept your excuses either.” Her tone stayed level. She wasn’t yelling. But every word cut deep. “The message didn’t come from you. But everything that caused it? That’s still on you.”
Alfred didn’t even try to speak. He couldn’t.
