Chapter 342 Signing the Papers

Ever since she moved out, she had never once come back here.

If Alfred hadn’t asked to end things in person, and if she hadn’t wanted to avoid stirring up more trouble, she wouldn’t have shown up now either.

Walking back into the gated community, she noticed the landscaping around the luxury homes was exactly as she remembered. Manicured lawns. Trimmed hedges. Not a leaf out of place.

Nella took the elevator, reached the familiar door, and paused for a few seconds before pressing the doorbell.

It opened right away.

She froze when she saw who answered.

It was Archie.

“Hey. You made it.”

He stepped aside immediately and held the door open.

“Come on in.”

Nella was still stunned. For a second, she actually wondered if she’d gone to the wrong place.

But once she stepped in and saw Alfred’s friends crowding the living room, and the whole space decorated like some over-the-top proposal, she stopped in her tracks.

Her brain blanked out.

She didn’t move. Not until Alfred came out of the crowd holding a bouquet of deep blue roses, wrapped in crisp silver paper.

His suit was perfectly tailored, and he looked like a poster boy for a luxury watch ad.

For a split second, Nella was reminded of the day he gave that big student speech at freshman orientation.

Only now, instead of confidence, he had a quiet tension about him that clung to his every

move.

He walked up to her slowly, then knelt down on one knee.

“Nella … I know our marriage over the past three years has been hard on you. I never stepped

up as your husband. But thank you for putting up with me this long. Today’s our anniversary.

Please?” I’m asking you to give me another shot. One chance. To love you the right way.

He looked up at her, eyes filled with desperation, and held out the roses.

Nella liked flowers. She used to grow them.

Back when they lived here, she had turned that rooftop patio into a garden. Packed it full with every bloom she could manage.

She used to hope he’d notice. That the flowers would speak for her.

She always picked the ones that meant secret love. Hoped he’d see the message. But there was one flower she could never grow. The blue rose.

It wasn’t real. It had to be dyed. Chemically processed. Artificial. The dye was sprayed onto a flower that was a mix of two different kinds.

It was pretty for sure, but never natural. Always man-made.

No matter how glossy it looked, no matter how perfectly arranged, it was fake. A fake flower disguised as something special.

Just like Alfred’s feelings for her now.

They looked sincere. But they felt off.

She couldn’t tell what was real anymore.

Tucked in the middle of the bouquet sat a small open ring box.

Inside was a blue diamond that sparkled so bright it threw light across the petals. It was stunning. Absolutely stunning. She couldn’t stop staring at it.

Alfred watched her freeze. She didn’t speak. Didn’t react.

The last bit of hope in his expression started to fall apart.

He forced a smile, but his fingers trembled as he reached into the bouquet and pulled out the ring.

“Nella this is real. I’m proposing for real. Just give me one chance. That’s all I’m asking.”

He tried to hold his smile. But when his eyes met hers, and saw no emotion, no flicker of hope, nothing at all… the last piece of him just fell apart.
