Alfred’s hand shook as he tried to slide the ring onto Nella’s finger, clinging to that last ounce of hope like his life depended on it.
Everyone around them held still.
They knew this proposal was a long shot. A desperate, one-in-a-million shot.
But deep down, they hoped she’d say yes.
Right before the ring touched her finger, Nella snapped out and pulled her hand away.
The light in Alfred’s eyes vanished. His entire face drained, like someone hit a kill switch.
His forced smile cracked and fell
apart.
“I … it’s okay. If you’re not ready, I get it,” he said, voice shaky, words breaking apart.
He kept trying to smile, but it looked awful. Crooked and crushed. Then he handed her a document with that same trembling hand.
“The old one’s expired. This is the new contract. Just … read it, please?”
Nella didn’t respond. She just stared at him while he pushed it toward her, his eyes locked on hers with burning desperation.
“Nella, let’s renew it. This time, for a hundred years. Let me love you for real this time, okay?”
His throat tightened. He smiled, but the red in his eyes gave him away.
That kind of pain-when someone already knows the answer but begs anyway-covered his
whole face.
Nella stayed completely still. Her eyes were just as blank as they’d always been.
“Please. Just read it,” he said softly.
His fingers shook as he opened the document and held it out.
He was begging her.
Even if she didn’t want to, her eyes still landed on the bold text.
The contract was short. But it was one-sided-brutally so.

Everything she once did for him during those three years was spelled out. This time, their places were switched.
Nella let out a quiet breath.
What was the point?
She looked at him.
“You really don’t have to do this. This deal’s bad for you.”
“I don’t care,” Alfred replied instantly.
Her voice didn’t change.
“I did all that stuff back then because I wanted to. I never blamed you. If I asked now, it’d feel fake.”
“It’s not fake. I want to do this,” he said fast.
That little bit of hope from her words-he grabbed it like it was all he had left.

“Nella, please. I mean it. This isn’t unfair. I want to do this. Just sign it. Let’s start over. A fresh start, with this new contract.”
His voice cracked. The smile was still there, but his eyes were hollow.
His lashes fluttered as he looked down. His eyes were rimmed red, like he was breaking apart from the inside.
The friends who had come to watch his “romantic comeback” didn’t say a word. Some of them looked like they wanted to step in.
But they remembered what he did. How his carelessness almost got Nella buried alive in that avalanche. And just like that, no one could speak.
