“Nella.”

Alfred’s voice cracked. It sounded desperate.

She finally moved.

:

Her hand lifted and reached toward the contract.

Alfred’s eyes, lifeless just seconds ago, flickered with hope.

But she slid the papers aside instead. Her gaze stayed calm as it landed on him-still kneeling.

“We’re not renewing it when it ends.”

The second she spoke, the entire room exhaled at once, like they’d all been holding their breath.

Everyone turned to Alfred. Some looked sorry for him. Some didn’t know what to feel.

And the fake smile on his face finally gave out. He went completely still, like someone had flipped a switch and shut him down.

“I thought this was a divorce meeting. Not a stage show.”

Nella didn’t even glance at the others. She pulled out the papers she brought-just in case-and set them down on the coffee table.

The word “divorce” hit the room like a slap.

Today marked three years since their wedding. Alfred had told everyone he wanted to say sorry and propose all over again.

So, they came.

They figured maybe she wouldn’t forgive him. But it couldn’t be that bad. He hadn’t even cheated on her with Zoey.

No one saw this coming. Nella walking in just to ask for a divorce?

People stared at each other. Stunned. Clueless. Fidgety.

stuck on one knee like a broken statue.

“S-sorry, Alfred. We should probably go too. The dog, uh, he tore up the couch again…”

Ryan trailed off as Claire dug her nails into his arm. He winced.

“Just talk to her, okay? Really talk to her.”

Eventually, the last door shut. Silence took over.

Nella pressed her fingers to her brow, like she couldn’t even bring herself to be angry anymore.

“Get up.”

Her tone didn’t change. She picked up the divorce papers and handed them to him.

“Look them over. If everything’s fine, sign it.”

The document was simple.

They were married, but she didn’t ask for half of anything.

Even the compensation clause Alfred had written into the original contract was still in there.

It started as a contract. It would end as one too. Clean and equal.

Alfred came back to life like he’d just been defibrillated. His hand trembled as he grabbed the document.

One hundred million dollars. That had always been the number.

Three years of marriage. A hundred million payout. Back then, it felt more than fair.

Most people would never see that much in a lifetime.

But now, staring at it, he felt sick.

He’d spent way more than that on Zoey.

“There’s something off with this.”

His voice scraped out, low and dry.

Nella’s brow twitched.

told her Alfred was about to pull something. For the first time, her calm expression cracked, the irritation rising in her eyes.
