But she still kept her patience and asked, “What’s the issue?”

Alfred raised his hand and pointed at the section labeled compensation.

Nella misunderstood. “A hundred million’s too much? Then 50 million.”

She wasn’t even interested in Alfred’s money. She just threw out a number without thinking.

But Alfred still didn’t agree.

Nella was done trying. “Forget it. I don’t want the money. Just sign it.”

Alfred let out a dry, bitter laugh. “Yeah, I get it. You really want this divorce.”

Nella frowned. “Seriously?”

What was with this guy and stating the obvious?

“Alfred, I kept my end of the deal. I played the role the entire time. The contract’s up, and now it’s your turn to do the same. Sign it. A man like you shouldn’t be the type to go back on his word.”

Alfred’s eyes lowered. He looked embarrassed.

For a second, something ugly crept into his mind. He actually wanted to back out.

Maybe even pull something to force her to stay.

As long as their marriage was still valid, she was still his wife. That meant he still had a shot.

But when he felt how cold and fed-up she was, he didn’t even have the guts to meet her eyes.

After a long silence, he stood up, picked up the divorce papers, and walked toward the study.

“I’ll

go revise the agreement.”

His head stayed down the entire time. He never looked back.

Nella didn’t say anything. She just sat quietly in the living room, waiting.

It didn’t take long before Alfred came back out, holding a freshly printed copy in his hand.

“I made a few edits. Look it over. If it looks fine, then…”

He hesitated. His voice cracked a little.

“If it looks fine, sign it.”

:

He sounded hoarse. The words caught in his throat.

Nella didn’t care if he gave her money or not. It didn’t matter what he changed.

Maybe he took out the entire payout. Whatever. It wasn’t like he’d be low enough to demand money from her instead.

Alfred might’ve failed her emotionally, but he wasn’t shameless to that level.

So she didn’t even glance at the revised terms. She just signed it.

“Nine o’clock tomorrow morning. Courthouse.”

“Okay.”

Alfred’s voice was rough. Nella opened the door and left Emerald Vista Bay without turning back.

Monday morning. Nine sharp.

Nella was already at the courthouse.

Three years ago, she got married to Alfred in the same complex.

Back then, she had waited here with hope and excitement. Now, everything was different.

Alfred didn’t keep her waiting long.

Just a few minutes later, she saw his Bentley pull through the courthouse gate.

“You been waiting long?”

He walked up to her. Even the way he asked reminded her of the day they got their marriage license.

Nella shook her head. “Not really. Just a couple minutes. Let’s go.”

Alfred gave a slight nod, and they walked together toward the divorce office.

As usual, the courthouse staff tried to mediate.

“Are you two absolutely sure? Marriage has its ups and downs. Maybe all you need is a break, or some time to think. If you’re just going through a rough patch, there are ways to work through
