Nella cut off the clerk’s tired attempt at mediation, flashed a polite smile, and said, “Thank you, but we’ve thought it through.”

The clerk looked over at Alfred.

Unlike the woman’s ease and cheer, the man looked completely worn out. His face showed every ounce of fatigue and defeat.

The disappointment in his eyes was impossible to miss.

Alfred noticed the clerk watching him. Even though he clearly didn’t want to be there, he nodded. “Yeah.”

The clerk sighed and didn’t push any further.

From that point on, the divorce process moved along smoothly.

Alfred didn’t say a word, but he did cooperate with Nella through the whole thing.

“If everything looks correct, I’ll need both of your signatures here.”

Once they signed, the clerk gave them a final reminder.

“After the mandatory one-month waiting period, you can come back to pick up the final decree. During that time, either of you can file to revoke the petition, as long as it’s before the deadline.”

As she said that, she threw a few strange glances at Alfred.

He looked completely out of it. It was hard to tell if he’d heard anything at all. Nella, on the other hand, was terrified he had heard it.

She stood up quickly and urged him, “Come on. Let’s go. There’s a line behind us.”

“Okay.”

Alfred replied with a low murmur and got up to follow her out.

Just as the two of them stepped out of the building, the clerk who handled their case suddenly blurted out, “Wait a second-why do they look so familiar? Oh my god, isn’t that Alfred from Keywood Group?”

Wasn’t he the same guy the media kept raving about for being madly in love with his wife?

Didn’t he spoil her little dog like it was his own kid?

And now they’re getting divorced?

What a joke.

Rich people really know how to keep up appearances.

“Nella.”

She turned around. Since Alfred had behaved himself and didn’t pull any stunts, her attitude toward him had softened.

“I’ll drive you back.”

Nella shook her head. “Don’t bother. I brought my car.

“Take care.” She waved at him, then walked quickly toward the parking lot without looking back.

Alfred just stood there, frozen. He watched her walk away, her steps light and carefree. There was a bitter smile tugging at his lips.

She looked genuinely happy to be free of him.

That smile reminded him of when they first got married. She had smiled like that back then

too.

He never gave her a proper wedding, either.

But that happiness only lasted for a while.

Over and over, he let her down. Again and again, he chose Zoey over her. And with each time he gave up on her, her smile faded just a little more.

But he never noticed.

Or maybe he did, but told himself she’d get over it. That she was easy to handle. So he never actually tried.

All that disappointment, all those moments she was cast aside. Alfred knew exactly why it ended like this. He had no one else to blame. It was all on him.

And now, he had to let her go.

As he turned away from the parking lot, he got in his car and headed back to the office.

Everyone at Keywood Group could tell something was wrong. Alfred had been in a foul mood for days. The whole company was walking on eggshells.

But today, the tension hit its peak. The pressure in the air was so thick, it felt like no one could breathe.

Everyone kept their heads down, praying his temper wouldn’t land on them.
