“I know you don’t want to see Alfred or Mr. Regis. It’s okay that you didn’t come visit me. I’m not upset with you.”

Wesley looked down at his hand, clasped tightly in hers and swallowed back the words that had been on the tip of his tongue.

He lifted his gaze to meet hers and let out a self-deprecating laugh. “Look at me, being all dramatic. Now you’re the one comforting me.”

Seeing that his emotions had settled, Nella finally breathed a sigh of relief.

She didn’t understand why Wesley’s mood had swung so wildly. It was just a matter of not coming to see her at the hospital. The way he acted, you’d think he was the one who caused her accident.

Outside the room, Alfred stood in silence.

Through the window, he watched Nella reach out to hold Wesley’s hand. He watched her try to cheer Wesley up despite still being injured herself. The light in his eyes dimmed.

A bitter smile tugged at the corner of his lips as he turned and walked away.

Wesley didn’t stay long. After sitting with her for a while he left.

After all this time recovering, Nella was finally able to get out of bed and move around.

Fortunately, Clifford had been transferred out of the ICU a few days ago and was now resting in a regular room, which finally eased the weight that had been pressing on Nella’s heart.

She remembered the divorce cooling period with Alfred. With her hospitalization, more than two weeks had already passed.

Thankfully, the deadline to finalize hadn’t come yet.

That day, she took the initiative and called Alfred.

Alfred arrived quickly. “Nella, you wanted to see me?”

It had been so long since Nella had reached out to him rst. This rare moment of her seeking him out left Alfred feeling almost flattered.

He noticed Nella sitting on the couch in her room. Thats when he realized she had changed out of her hospital gown and was wearing her regular clothes.

“The waiting period’s already past the halfway mark. I’m feeling fine now, so I figured we should go finalize things today. If we wait past 60 days, we’ll have to start the whole process over.”

Alfred froze.

He never expected that Nella had called him over just to finalize the divorce.

He had rushed over, eager and hopeful, only to have her throw cold water all over him.

“You called me here just to finalize the divorce?”

His voice came out hoarse and raw, the loneliness in his eyes threatening to spill over.

Nella nodded. Thinking about how much Alfred had helped her family these past few days, she softened her

tone.

“I really appreciate everything you’ve done for my family during this time.”

Hearing her polite, distant voice, Alfred forced the words out.

“You don’t have to be so formal with me. It was the least I could do.”

He pushed down the ache in his chest and said to her, “Then … let’s go.”

Nella nodded, and the two of them left the hospital together.

This time, Nella didn’t bother with formalities. She got into Alfred’s car and they headed straight to the

courthouse.

The divorce went smoothly.

Walking out of the building with the divorce certificate in hand, Nella let out a long breath of relief.

Throughout the entire process, Alfred had remained silent, looking utterly defeated.

“Nella.”

He called her name and walked up beside her. “Let me take you back to the hospital.”
