Chapter 41 Waiting Through the Long Night
“You’re not a doctor. Since you’re here, listen to the doctors and wait calmly for Patrick to come
OUL
Seeing that Alfred had no intention of replacing Nella, Zoey felt deeply unwilling
But she knew that once Alfred made a decision, he would not change it. If the kept pushing, he would only think she was being unreasonable, so she had no choice but to stop.
Still, she bit her lower lip with a wronged look, her eyes red as she spoke.
“I understand, Alfred. I was wrong. I shouldn’t have doubted Nella.
Seeing her like this, Alfred’s expression softened. He raised a hand and patted her shoulder to comfort her.
“The surgery will take several more hours. I’ll stay here. Should I have the driver take you home first?”
Zoey sniffed and shook her head firmly. “Patrick is still fighting for his life. Even if I go home, I won’t be able to sleep. I’d rather wait here with you, Alfred.”
Alfred nodded and did not insist.
Inside the operating room, the work continued without pause.
If Patrick had not been injured today, Alfred would never have realized how demanding Nella’s job was.
One surgery meant standing for hours without food or water. As a cardiac surgeon, this was likely her daily routine.
At that moment, Alfred could not clearly describe how he felt.
He only knew that somewhere deep in his chest, there was a faint ache.
“Mr. Keywood, this surgery will still take a long time. Would you and this lady like to rest in the lounge? I can notify you when it’s over.”
“No need. I’ll stay here.”
Alfred refused without hesitation.
When he had called Caleb earlier, it was only out of curiosity. He wanted to see what Nella looked like during surgery.

Now that he had seen it, even with such distance between them, he instinctively wanted to stay.
Even if he did nothing, standing here felt like fighting alongside her.
Alfred could not explain his behavior, but deep down, he simply did not want to leave.
“The artificial graft has been connected to the aortic root.”
“Pause cardiopulmonary bypass.”
“Rebuild the aortic arch.”
“Reconstruct the multi branch vessels.”
Nella’s voice continued to come from the operating room from time to time, steady and tireless.
It was still gentle, yet filled with a calming strength.
Alfred did not know how long he had been standing there. It felt as if just standing was his way of sharing her burden.
Time passed slowly.
One hour. Two hours.
Five hours later…
“Heartbeat restored. We can withdraw the bypass.”
“Noah, once you confirm there’s no bleeding at the anastomosis, you handle the final suturing.”
“Understood, Dr. Milo.”
When these words reached Alfred’s ears, he saw Nella finally step away from the operating table. At last, signs of fatigue showed on her body.
“Mr. Keywood, the surgery is complete. Once the chest incision is fully closed, the patient will be sent to the ICU for observation.”
Logan reminded him quietly.
“Thank you.”
Alfred nodded. After standing for so long, he shifted his legs and finally felt the numbness and soreness from staying in one position.

If just standing here made his legs ache, how exhausted must Nella be after standing for hours, fully focused, performing such a complex surgery?
