Chapter 42 After the Lights Go Out
Thinking of this made Alfred’s chest feel tight, with a faint sense of discomfort.
He turned and walked out of the observation room.
Zoey, who had been half asleep nearby, saw him leave and quickly followed.
“Alfred, where are you going?”

Alfred did not answer. He quickened his pace and headed toward the emergency operating
area.
When he reached the operating room, the light was still on. Nella had not come out yet.
Alfred waited patiently for a while longer. Finally, the red light went out.
The operating room door slowly opened, and Nella walked out.
As she lifted her eyes, she saw the tall figure standing in front of her, as if he had many things to
say.
She looked at Alfred, then at Zoey beside him, and removed her mask.
“The surgery was successful, but the patient is not fully out of danger yet. There are possible complications after surgery. He needs to be sent to the ICU for close observation.”
Her voice carried clear signs of exhaustion.
Alfred stared at her face without blinking, as if he wanted to speak. Nella looked at him and continued.
“There are some post operative notes that the family needs to sign. Dr. Bennett will explain everything in detail later. If you have other questions, you can ask me then. I’m going back to the duty room.”
After saying this, Nella turned and walked away without looking back.
Alfred was about to follow her when Patrick was pushed out of the operating room.
“Patrick.”
Zoey rushed forward, grabbing the bed rail as tears streamed down again.
Seeing her like this, Alfred knew she would not be able to handle anything. He forced down the strange restlessness in his chest and waited nearby.

“Are you the patient’s family?” a doctor asked.
“Yes, we are.”
Zoey glanced at Alfred and nodded quickly.
Alfred hesitated for a second. He neither nodded nor denied it. Instead, he said to the young doctor in front of him.
“Please explain everything to me.”
Noah nodded, pulled Alfred aside, and handed him several papers to sign.
He carefully explained all possible post surgery risks and situations.
“If you understand, please sign here.”
Alfred took the pen and signed his name quickly. Patrick was then sent to the ICU.
No visitors were allowed in the ICU. Alfred said to Zoey. “It’s late. The driver is outside. Let him take you
you home first.”
“What about you?” Zoey asked.
“I have something else to do.”
Zoey knew Alfred wanted to find Nella.
She felt unwilling, but she could not find a reason to keep him any longer.
“Then I’ll head home first. Thank you so much tonight, Alfred. If it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t know what to do.”
“Mm.”
Alfred turned the ring on his ring finger, answering without much focus.
After Zoey left, Alfred did not leave the hospital right away. Instead, he changed direction and walked toward the surgical building.
After changing out of her surgical gown, Nella returned to her office, exhaustion weighing on her entire body.
Lately, her sleep had been terrible. Every night, she woke up from nightmares.
