It sounded muffled, carrying a hint of grievance that slipped out after being met with Nella’s coldness.

Nella only gave a soft “Mm,” saying nothing more.

Just then, the door to the private room was gently pushed open again.

Dressed in a tailcoat, the waiter rolled in a cart of dishes, smiling warmly amid the elegant violin music.

After carefully setting the food on the table, he said “Enjoy your meal” in Belcourian, then withdrew gracefully.

Nella wasn’t really used to foreign cuisine. Still, unwilling to waste food, she forced herself to take a few bites.

Across from her, Alfred spoke again. “Does this suit your taste?”

When he asked, there was even a trace of caution in his voice.

Seriously…

The irritation Nella had been holding back started to surface again.

She put down her cutlery and looked at Alfred’s unusually gentle expression. “You really don’t need to do all this.”

As soon as she spoke, Alfred’s movements paused. The hand holding his utensils tightened unconsciously.

“If you wanted to ask about Patrick, there was no need to take me out to dinner or give me gifts. Being responsible to patients and their families is part of my job as a doctor. If you have questions, you can just ask me directly.”

Alfred froze for a brief moment.

Only then did he remember that he had used Patrick as an excuse to ask her out in the first place.

Hearing her say this now, he was left speechless, unsure how to respond.

In the end, he let out a sigh and set his utensils down.

His deep eyes settled on her face, unusually serious. “You really can’t tell that I’m apologizing to

you?”

Nella paused. “Apologizing?”

She looked at him with confusion and mild bewilderment.

Alfred pressed his lips together. The apology reached the tip of his tongue, but he still found it hard to say.

“These past couple of days, I’ve thought about it carefully. Because of Zoey, I really did a lot of things that disappointed you. I asked you out to dinner today because I wanted to formally apologize.”

Nella fell silent.

She looked at Alfred, and Alfred looked back at her.

Those eyes of his, so easily mesmerizing, were now watching her with cautious care.

Nella tried to feel something.

But when she realized that Alfred was apologizing so earnestly, there wasn’t the slightest ripple in her heart.

No bitterness. No anger. No sadness or grievance.

And no joy or surprise from hearing his apology.

It was so calm it felt as if she had lost all sense of emotion.

“The

past is in the past. Since you’ve apologized, I accept it. There’s no need to bring it up again,” she said.

Her tone remained flat, with no noticeable rise or fall.

Yet from that very lack of emotion, Alfred heard resistance and rejection.

He felt that she didn’t like him constantly bringing up what had happened before.

Alfred pressed his thin lips together, thought for a few seconds, then gave her a small smile.

“Alright. Then we won’t talk about the past anymore. Since you’ve accepted my apology, how about you accept my apology gift too?”

The last word rose slightly at the end, carrying unconscious indulgence and coaxing.

Not wanting to argue with him over something so trivial, Nella gave a brief response and
