Chapter 59 You’re Back

It seemed like Marshal understood what Nella was saying. He let out a few soft whining sounds, as if trying to answer her.
He sounded much stronger than when she first met him.
His little cries echoed in her ears, making Nella’s heart melt completely.
She stayed with Marshal at the hospital for about an hour before leaving.
Outside, the rain still hadn’t let up.
Nella took a cab back to Emerald Vista Bay, and it was already way past 10 p.m. when she arrived.
Opening the front door and seeing the brightly lit living room, she paused.
“You’re back.”
Alfred’s low voice sounded from the couch.
Nella stopped in her tracks.
She glanced over at the couch.
Alfred was already sitting there, dressed in pale gray loungewear.
He seemed to be waiting for her.
She couldn’t hide her surprise.
Why is Alfred home so early?
“Surprised to see me here?”
Alfred caught the shock on her face and asked, sounding a bit annoyed.
Snapping out of it, Nella replied, “Shouldn’t you be with Ms. Mack right now?”
She kept her tone casual as she slipped on her slippers and headed further inside.
The rain outside still hadn’t eased up. She’d even heard thunder rumbling every now and then on her way home.
She had honestly thought Alfred would stay at the Mack Residence with Zoey.

It’s still storming outside. Is he really okay with leaving Zoey alone?
Nella’s words made Alfred’s face turn cold at once.
But Nella didn’t even look his way. She just tossed out that question and started walking toward the guest room.
Ever since they began sleeping in separate rooms, she’d slowly moved her clothes from the main bedroom closet into the guest room.
Just as she pushed open the guest room door, she heard Alfred’s cold voice behind her.
“Nella.”
She turned and realized he’d somehow appeared right behind her.
There was something complicated and intense in his eyes.
“What is it?”
Nella asked, stopping halfway through opening the door.
Alfred gazed at her, as if there were a thousand things he wanted to say but didn’t know how.
After a second, he rubbed his brow, sounding even more irritated as he asked,
“In your mind, do you really think I’d be so clueless as to spend the night with another woman?”
“Huh?”
Nella looked totally baffled.
He’d stayed over at Zoey’s countless times before, so why was he suddenly making a fuss out of it now?
Her confusion was genuine.
Alfred could see it.
The confusion in her eyes was real.
Was he really so unworthy of her trust?
He couldn’t put his feelings into words. Staring at the blank look in Nella’s eyes, his frustration only deepened.

A moment later, Nella smoothed out her expression, returning to her usual calm.
She said, “I figured with how hard it was raining, you wouldn’t come home.”

She tossed out the explanation, then added, “If there’s nothing else, I’ll go get changed.”
Alfred glanced at Nella’s rain-damp hair, jaw clenched, but he didn’t push her.
