Chapter 60 I Understand

Alfred was still sitting on the couch, his face set in a grim expression. He didn’t say a word.
He looked lost in thought, and it was impossible to guess what he was thinking.
When he heard her footsteps, he turned and looked at her. He opened his mouth, hesitated, and then finally offered an explanation.
“Zoey’s depression flared up again. I just went to give her her meds. I left as soon as she fell asleep.”
He’d never bothered to explain things like this before.
He wasn’t sure if it was Mason’s words the other day that got to him, or if he just felt guilty for leaving Nella in Glacieroth all alone. For the first time, he felt the urge to explain himself to Nella.
Nella paused for a moment, then nodded.
“Okay. I understand.”
That calm, detached reaction wasn’t what Alfred wanted at all.
The more indifferent she acted, the deeper his strange anxiety grew.
He had no idea what was wrong with him. He only knew that this uneasy feeling made him deeply uncomfortable.
He also felt a sense of helplessness he couldn’t shake.
Just as Nella was about to open the guest room door, he grabbed her wrist.
His grip was a little too tight, and it made Nella frown from the pain.
“Nella, this isn’t how you should be reacting.”
His voice was tinged with anger, but even he couldn’t miss the slight tremble beneath it.
Nella’s patience wore thin and her temper flared.
She stared right at Alfred and shot back, “Then how do you think I should react? Should I throw
a fit and start a fight? Or do you want me to act heartless and tell you to ignore Ms. Mack?”
“I…”

“All right, then. From now on, don’t get involved in anything related to Zoey. Don’t answer her calls, okay?”
Alfred was at a loss for words.
Nella gave a mocking smile, her lips curling as she looked at him.
The sarcasm in her eyes made Alfred instinctively look away, unable to meet her gaze.
“You see? If I actually said that, you’d hate it.”
She yanked her hand out of Alfred’s grasp.
Her smile only grew, which made Alfred even more uneasy.
“You want me to be obedient and understanding, but you also want me to kick up a fuss. Isn’t that a contradiction?”
Nella looked Alfred straight in the eye. She reached out to straighten the collar of his loungewear and said, “We’re still husband and wife. For Professor Fred’s sake, can we please not make things any harder than they already are?”
By “Professor Fred,” she meant Caleb.
Caleb was an old family friend of the Keywoods, and he was also their matchmaker.
She stayed perfectly calm, as if none of this concerned her, but every word she spoke made Alfred’s anxiety spike.
“I…”
He opened his mouth, but found he had nothing to say.
He looked away on purpose,
his eyes
lowered.
After a long silence, he finally murmured an apology, “Sorry, I didn’t mean to make things hard
for you.
you. I just…”
Just what?
Nella’s look grew even more puzzled.
“I just feel like things between us aren’t the same anymore.”
When he said that, there was more confusion in his eyes and voice than ever before.
Hearing this, Nella paused for a moment, then laughed.

“Haven’t things between us always been like this? What’s changed?”
Alfred started to answer out of habit, but when he opened his mouth, he found himself speechless.
When it came down to it, he couldn’t name a single thing that had really changed between them.
