Chapter 61 Chicken Noodle Soup
They still treated each other like polite acquaintances, still kept to their own routines.
Everything went according to the contract they’d signed-so what was different, really?
Yet Alfred couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off.
A low rumble of thunder broke the heavy silence between them.
Right after that, Alfred’s phone started ringing.
“Alfred, answer your phone! It’s Zoey calling!”

Hearing the goofy ringtone, Nella suddenly wanted to laugh, though she didn’t know why.
She pressed her lips together, barely hiding the smile.
By contrast, Alfred’s brows furrowed as soon as he heard the ringtone.
“You’d better answer it. That thunder was really loud-Ms. Mack might be scared.”
Nella reminded him kindly, then headed into the guest room.
As the door closed, Alfred’s head jerked up to look at her.
But a moment later, the closed door cut off his view.
The goofy ringtone kept blaring obnoxiously.
The more Alfred listened, the more annoyed he felt.
This time, he just put his phone on silent and didn’t answer Zoey’s call.
After going back to her room, Nella checked some real estate listings on her computer, then got ready for bed.
A knock sounded at her bedroom door.
She paused at the bathroom door, surprised, and glanced toward the door.
Just then, the knocking came again.
She walked over and opened the door.
Alfred was standing there, still dressed in the gray loungewear.

She blurted out, “Why are you still here?”
As soon as the words left her mouth, Alfred’s expression turned cold.
“Where do you think I should be?”
Nella remembered the thunder and Zoey’s call.
She assumed Alfred was already on his way to the Mack Residence by now.
Honestly, she thought he shouldn’t have come home tonight at all.
It would have been less trouble, and Zoey would have slept better.
Of course, Nella didn’t say any of this out loud.
But Alfred caught her meaning just from her expression.
He almost laughed out of frustration.
But in the end, he just took a deep breath and forced the anger down.
“I saw your hair was wet from the rain when you came in. It’s easy to catch a cold in this weather. I made you some chicken noodle soup. Go have some.”
Nella looked even more shocked.
She had never seen Alfred cook before. Yet, he had made chicken noodle soup for her.
It was so unlike the cold and distant man she knew.
When she just stood there, staring at Alfred, he urged again, “Go on. It won’t taste nice if it gets cold.”
Nella snapped out of it and nodded.
“Okay, thank you.”
At the table, the cup of freshly cooked chicken noodle soup was still steaming.
Nella sat down and took small sips.
Then she heard Alfred ask in an offhand tone, “Where did you go just now? How’d you soaked?”
Hearing his question, Nella froze.

Her hair had gotten wet when she was running from the pet hospital to the cab.
It wasn’t a long walk, but the rain had been so heavy that she couldn’t avoid getting drenched.
