Chapter 62 I’m Still His Legal Wife
But she wasn’t about to explain that to Alfred.
Knowing he disliked cats and dogs, she did not plan to tell him about Marshal. She brushed it
off casually. “I got back early and just wandered around nearby for a bit.”
Alfred did not doubt her. He nodded.
The spacious living room fell quiet again.
Nella was deeply uncomfortable sharing such quiet space with Alfred. It felt unbearably awkward.
She did not even wait for the chicken noodle soup to cool.
She ate it quickly, one sip after another.
Then, she stood up from the table and said to Alfred, “Thanks for the chicken noodle soup. It’s -getting late, so I’m going to sleep.”
Alfred seemed like he wanted to say something, but Nella didn’t even spare him a glance. She walked quickly into the guest room and closed the door.
Only after the door shut between them did Nella let out a long breath.
Why is Alfred acting so strangely?
She frowned, then relaxed her brow.
She had just lain down on the bed when her phone rang abruptly.
Seeing the caller ID, Nella felt both surprised and speechless, but she still picked up anyway.
“Hello, Ms. Mack.”
Zoey’s accusatory voice came through the phone,
“You told Alfred not to answer my calls.”
Nella was stunned speechless by the accusation.
“You must have said something to Alfred. That’s why he isn’t answering my calls.”
Zoey’s voice was sharp. She was no longer pretending to be gentle, weak, or innocent in front of
her.

Perhaps Alfred’s rare failure to answer her call tonight had shaken her. She no longer bothered to pretend.
“Ms. Mack, if Alfred doesn’t answer your calls, the person you should confront is him, not me,” Nella spoke calmly.
“Alfred never ignores my calls. If it weren’t for you, he wouldn’t treat me this way.”
Zoey spoke with absolute confidence, which made Nella laugh.
“Ms. Mack, haven’t you always said that you matter more to Alfred than I do? If that’s really the case, then he wouldn’t ignore you just because of a few words from me.”
That single remark left Zoey completely speechless.
After all, she had always taken pride in being Alfred’s favorite, constantly showing off her sense of superiority in front of Nella.
Admitting defeat to Nella was something she could not accept.
“Ms. Mack, you seem to have lost your confidence.””
Nella let out a light laugh, making Zoey stomp in anger on the other end.
Zoey was completely floored by Nella’s casual tone, but she had no comeback for her words.
She even heard a hint of mockery in Nella’s relaxed voice.
“Nella, don’t get smug. Alfred will always choose me.”
Zoey’s teeth-gritting voice came through the phone.
Even though she tried to sound firm, Nella could still hear how much weaker her confidence had become.
“So you’re done pretending.”
Nella replied with a smile, her tone sounding like she was teasing a pet.
Zoey was completely choked by that sentence.
“It’s understandable that you stopped pretending. After all, no matter how good Alfred is to you…”
She deliberately paused for dramatic effect, then continued, her tone turning light and almost flippant.

“I’m still his legal wife. You’ll always be his mistress at best. It’s only natural for you to be jealous
of me.”
“You-”
As soon as Nella finished speaking, Zoey let out a shrill scream on the other end of the line.
