Alfred studied Nella’s expression with a probing gaze. To his own surprise, he felt a twinge of anticipation.

He actually hoped Zoey was right-he hoped Nella was jealous.

“So you called her

called her my mistress?”

Alfred asked again, a faint smile tugging at his lips.

Nella didn’t notice, but she could hear the pleasure in his tone.

Why was he so happy about her calling Zoey his mistress?

If she gave up her place as his wife, would Alfred get down on his knees and thank her?

Nella put down the half-eaten sandwich in her hand.

She met Alfred’s deep eyes and asked, “Do you want me to apologize to her?”

She didn’t know how Zoey had twisted the story to Alfred, but it couldn’t have been anything good.

“No, I…”

Looking at Nella’s calm face, Alfred panicked for a second and instinctively started to deny it, but Nella cut him off-

“I’m not going to apologize.”

She picked up the rest of her sandwich, finished her milk, and took the dishes to the kitchen.

Then she tossed the leftover sandwich into the garbage disposal.

“I’m full. Enjoy your breakfast.”

Nella came out of the kitchen and walked to the entryway to change her shoes.

Alfred came up to her, looking at her with a complicated and helpless expression. “Are you

mad?”

Nella was speechless.

After changing shoes, she picked up her bag to leave, but Alfred grabbed her arm.

She turned to him. “What is it?”

“Wait for me.”

Nella was baffled.

“I’ll drive you.”

Nella started to refuse, but Alfred cut her off, “I’m heading to the hospital too.”

Nella remembered that Patrick was supposed to be transferred out of the ICU today. She hesitated, then nodded.

“All right. Thank you.”

Sensing how distant and polite she sounded, Alfred glanced at her, then looked saying anything.

They stood side by side, facing the elevator doors. After a while, Alfred said quietly, “You don’t have to be so polite with me.”

Yes, I do. Being polite is the only way to keep our peace.

Nella answered in her mind, but didn’t say it out loud.

When the elevator opened, she stepped in first, with Alfred close behind.

As soon as he pressed the button for the garage, Alfred’s phone rang.

He glanced at the caller ID, then looked at Nella with a hint of guilt.

He answered with a frown, “Hello? Zoey.”

Just hearing Zoey’s name made Nella tense up.

When did Alfred change Zoey’s ringtone to the default one?

She hadn’t expected it to be Zoey.
