Zoey’s emotions ran high, and her eyes reddened instantly.

She completely forgot to act sweet and innocent and pointed straight at Nella, demanding an answer from Alfred.

That accusatory tone was thick with hostility toward Nella, and Alfred picked up on it right

away.

His expression darkened.

“Is there a problem?”

His cold voice made Zoey freeze.

She quickly realized she’d just slipped out of her innocent act and changed her expression immediately.

Tears fell down her cheeks, as if right on cue.

“I’m sorry, Alfred. I wasn’t trying to question you. I just… I just feel so insecure. I … I…..”

The next second, she squeezed her eyes shut and fainted right into Alfred’s arms.

“Zoey!”

Alfred’s voice turned anxious in an instant-gone was the previous impatience and coldness.

Nella stood by and did nothing.

She was a doctor, and the moment Zoey “fainted,” she knew Zoey was faking it.

It made sense Alfred didn’t notice-he was too worried to see through it.

Still, Nella didn’t warn him.

She knew that if she did, Alfred would just turn around and blame her.

He’d call her petty and mean, accuse her of seeing the worst in Zoey.

So she kept her mouth shut and started to leave.

She’d only taken two steps when Alfred’s cold voice stopped her.

She turned around and saw Alfred holding the “unconscious” Zoey, his eyes sharp and full of accusation.

“Zoey fainted, and you’re just going to walk away like that? Aren’t you going to do anything? You’re a doctor.”

The coldness in Alfred’s eyes sent a faint stab of pain through Nella’s chest.

It was as if a needle had pricked her heart unexpectedly.

She thought she’d learned to stay calm around Alfred, that nothing he said could rattle her

anymore.

But hearing him accuse her so unfairly still hurt.

She was honestly relieved she hadn’t exposed Zoey’s act.

Otherwise, whatever Alfred said next would have been even nastier.

She took a slow breath, her voice tight as she pointed to the building in front of them.

“That’s the ER. If you’d stopped blaming me, you could’ve taken her to see a doctor already.”

Her expression was unreadable-calm, almost distant.

She didn’t even try to defend herself against his accusations.

That calm, almost distant look made Alfred feel like Nella was slipping further away from him.

He felt a jolt of anxiety,

Suddenly, he realized just how unreasonable he’d just been.

He knew he always overreacted whenever Zoey got sick.

He knew Nella hadn’t done anything wrong, but he still overreacted.

“Nella, I—”

“Just go,” Nella cut him off, voice flat. She turned and walked away toward the surgery building without looking back.
