“Alfred.”

She opened her eyes in confusion. “What happened just now?”

When Zoey woke up, Alfred breathed a sigh of relief and helped her sit in a chair nearby.

“You passed out just now.”

Alfred rubbed his brow, exhaustion and helplessness all over his face.

His mind was still full of the cold look Nella gave him when she left. It weighed on his heart and left him feeling suffocated.

“Ah

… it must be my somatic symptoms acting up again.”

She hit her head lightly, a look of regret in her eyes.

“It must be my emotions getting out of control. It triggered my depression. I’m so useless. I keep making you worry, Alfred.”

She bit her lip and looked as if she was eaten up with guilt.

Alfred knew depression could cause fainting spells for all sorts of reasons.

That was why he’d panicked so much when Zoey collapsed.

He worried her depression had flared up again.

Zoey’s illness had started because of him, and he couldn’t just ignore her.

But as he stood there, letting Zoey pull him around as she always had, he found himself feeling unexpectedly irritable and weary.

He didn’t even have the energy to comfort her.

Zoey sensed that. For once, Alfred didn’t try to coax her or make her feel better.

Her heart dropped, and Nella’s name flashed in her mind.

That woman must have done something. Otherwise, why would Alfred be so different with me lately?

“Alfred, I’m fine now. Let’s go see Patrick.”

Zoey spoke up again.

Alfred just grunted and led the way toward the inpatient building.

Even he didn’t realize his steps had gotten faster.

Patrick was transferred out of the ICU and into the best VIP room in the hospital.

Once everything was settled, Zoey stayed in the room to wait for Patrick to wake up.

Alfred didn’t stay.

Instead, he headed to the surgical building where Nella worked.

Outside her office, he raised his hand to knock several times, but each time, he hesitated.

He couldn’t stop thinking about how he’d snapped at Nella earlier, and guilt crept into his eyes.

After a moment of hesitation, he finally raised his hand to knock.

“Are you looking for Dr. Milo?”

A voice stopped him.

He turned to see a nurse eyeing him curiously.

Alfred nodded coolly. “Yes, where is she?”

“Dr. Milo went to the inpatient building for rounds.”

She went to do rounds?

He’d just come from the inpatient building and hadn’t seen her.

With that thought, he headed straight for the inpatient building.

“Your blood pressure is good today, but your heart rate’s still a bit fast. We’ll keep monitoring it.

“Your incision’s healing well. No redness or swelling.”

you, Dr. Milo.”

Leaving the room, Nella got into the elevator, heading to the upper floors and the VIP suites.

As the doors opened, she found herself face to face with Alfred, who was already in the elevator.
