Chapter 68 I Get It

At this time, there weren’t many people in the elevator. Alfred watched Nella, who was staring at the floor numbers in silence, his lips pressed into a thin line.
As soon as the doors slid open and Nella stepped out, Alfred called after her.
“Nella.”
Nella stopped and turned to look at Alfred following behind her.
It was the first time she’d heard Alfred call her without a trace of blame in his voice.
Instead of the delight she’d once imagined she’d feel, there was only a faint sense of novelty.
Alfred grew a little awkward under her gaze.
He rubbed his nose and looked at her, speaking quietly.
-“About what happened in the parking lot earlier—I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have lost my temper
with you.”
Nella paused, then nodded. “All right, I accept your apology. I still need to do my rounds. If there’s nothing else, I’ll get going.”
Alfred, however, wasn’t satisfied with her reaction.
Even though Nella had accepted his apology, he still followed her, explaining,
“I was just afraid her depression would act up again. I got a little worked up.”
He watched her carefully.
Nella responded with a perfectly normal expression and a completely ordinary tone.
“Yeah, famiy members tend to get anxious in hospitals. I see it all the time. It’s understandable.”
Hearing the word “family” from Nella again, Alfred felt annoyed.
“I told you—I’m not her family.”
Nella didn’t know why Alfred was so hung up on that label.
He did all the things a family member would do, so why wouldn’t he just admit it?
Oh, right.

Chapter 681 Get It

No matter what, he was still, on paper, a married man.
Appearances mattered, especially for the Keywoods. Everything had to look proper.
“All right, I get it.”
Nella nodded along and kept walking toward the patient rooms.
But Alfred, as if unwilling to let her believe otherwise, insisted.
“Zoey’s illness is because of me. I can’t just abandon her, I—”
Finally, Nella stopped, impatient.
She met Alfred’s anxious face head-on.
Her cold, impatient gaze cut him off.
Under Alfred’s nervous gaze, she spoke, one word at a time.
“I said I get it.”
That frosty look felt like a sudden knife to Alfred’s chest.
All his words caught in his throat, stinging.
“I’m going to check on Patrick. Are you coming?”
Nella changed the subject abruptly.
She ignored the sudden shift in Alfred’s expression.
He pressed his lips together and, after a moment, nodded.
When they reached Patrick’s room, Nella knocked.
The door opened, and Zoey’s face appeared.
Her expression fell the second she saw Nella.
But when she spotted Alfred behind her, she forced a smile.
“Nella, Alfred, you’re here.”
Zoey worked hard to hide her resentment and disgust, putting on that familiar innocent act as she let them into the room.
