Chapter 80 The Shattered Dream

Now that Alfred suddenly became Nella’s husband, it felt like a gift that had fallen straight from the sky.
How could Nella not be tempted?
So she began to test the waters, carefully.
She probed to see where his socalled boundaries really were.
She started calling him “Alfred” in an intimate way.
When they moved into the new place, she pretended not to know and slept in the main bedroom.
Like an ordinary wife, she personally made breakfast for the man she loved.
When he came home late from business dinners, she left a light on for him and prepared -hangover drinks.
Every day, she found different things to share with him, even when he never replied.
She deceived herself, sinking into a marriage world she’d written for herself, living a dream of being a normal couple.
And through all of her careful, tentative actions, Alfred never once objected.
She thought Alfred was indulging her.
After all, he even allowed her into the main bedroom, a place so private.
But then she learned about Zoey.
Watching herself be abandoned by Alfred again and again because of Zoey, she finally understood something.
A story you make up is still just a story.
She thought his restraint, his self-control, was the behavior of a gentleman honoring their
agreement.
But the truth was, he simply had no interest in touching her at all.
But the joke was that Alfred lost control today.

He almost kissed her.
He almost crossed the line.
:
Something that had only ever existed in her dreams nearly happened.
And she stopped him.

She’d finally managed to crawl out of that ten-year unrequited love and look at Alfred as an outsider.
She didn’t dare, and didn’t want, to be dragged back into that swamp where she’d always be the one he abandoned.
She also knew that Alfred’s actions earlier were nothing more than a spur-of-the-moment impulse when the mood hit, nothing more.
Yet her chest still felt sour and swollen, aching badly.
She sat in the dressing room for a long time before slowly steadying her emotions, changing her clothes, and coming out.
Maybe because what happened earlier was too awkward, Nella didn’t go back out. She only walked to the door and locked the guest bedroom from the inside.
The next day.
As usual, Nella washed up, got dressed, and came out of the guest bedroom.
Unlike the past few days, the living room was unusually quiet today.
Alfred was nowhere to be seen.
Thinking he’d gone to the office early, she let out a long breath of relief.
She’d been wondering how she was supposed to face Alfred after last night’s awkward scene without it feeling strange.
Now that he’d already left early, it actually made things easier for her.
With that thought, she walked to the entryway and was about to put on her shoes when the main bedroom door opened.
Alfred came out wearing a light gray set of loungewear, his cheeks flushed an unusual red.
Every now and then, he let out a few coughs.

Nella looked at him and frowned.
“Are you sick?”
“M-maybe. Cough, cough…”
He covered his mouth and coughed harder.
The already unnatural flush deepened with the violent coughing.

Nella stood at the door without moving. After hesitating for a moment, she finally couldn’t bring herself to ignore it. She walked to the cabinet with the first-aid kit and took out some Tylenol.
She poured him a cup of warm water and handed the pill to him.
