No Renewal My Contract Husband (Nella and Alfred) novel Chapter 85

Chapter 85 Not This Time

“If I don’t leave now, I’ll be late for work. Or you can call Ms. Mack yourself.”

Then Nella waved at Alfred. “Bye.”

The moment she turned around, Alfred grabbed her wrist.

The burning heat in his palm made Nella instinctively want to shake him off.

“What about you?” Alfred asked hoarsely.

His eyes were bloodshot from the fever, red creeping along the corners.

“What about me?”

Nella paused and looked at him in confusion.

“Why aren’t you staying home to keep me company?”

Alfred’s reddened eyes fixed on her.

Nella frowned slightly.

“I have to work.”

“You can take time off.”

Alfred said it matter-of-factly, but Nella’s frown only deepened.

Before she could speak, Alfred added, “When I had a fever last year, you stayed home with me all day. Why can’t you do that today?”

His hoarse voice carried the weak, aggrieved tone of someone who was sick.

But to Nella, it sounded overly clingy and unreasonable.

When he brought up last year, she felt both amused and angry.

She was amused at her own foolishness, and, at the same time, angry at her lovesick self back then.

That day, worried about leaving Alfred alone at home, she’d taken time off from her department.

She’d begged coworkers to cover her shift and owed more than a few favors.

In the end, Alfred had said, “You don’t need to treat me like a kid. I can take care of myself.”

She knew then that everything she’d done hadn’t been appreciated.

In the end, she’d only hurt herself.

So this time, she wasn’t doing it again.

And now, he was asking why she wasn’t taking time off like last year.

Nella laughed in anger and looked straight into Alfred’s resentful eyes.

“You’re not a child. It’s just a cold and a fever. You can take care of yourself.”

That single sentence left Alfred speechless.

And suddenly, it felt familiar.

The next second, realization hit him.

The redness on his face drained pale all at once.

He remembered.

Those were what he’d said to Nella last year, on the day she took time off to stay home and care

for him.

Back then, he’d only meant that he didn’t want to trouble her.

He hadn’t wanted her to delay her own work or owe favors because of him.

But hearing it now, those words sounded like he’d been telling her to mind her own business.

Panic rose in his chest. He opened his mouth to explain.

But once he did, he didn’t know where to start.

Nella didn’t know what he’d realized. She checked her watch again and said, “I’ve got several surgeries scheduled today. The patients are waiting. I can’t delay. I really have to go.”

She pulled her hand free from his grip and left quickly.

This time, Alfred didn’t stop her.

He just stood there, watching the front door close, his expression falling.

Once again, he realized that Nella seemed to be slowly, quietly pulling away from him.

Is it because the marriage contract is about to expire?

But I drafted the contract myself. So why do I feel like I don’t want it to end at all?
