She was afraid all her hard-won resolve would collapse because of Alfred’s self-righteous attempts at “making up for things.”

After leaving the elevator, she headed straight for the subway, not wanting to pause for even a second.

At the hospital, she went on rounds as usual.

When she reached Patrick’s room, Zoey wasn’t there.

Patrick was eating breakfast with the help of a caregiver.

Seeing Nella come in, he smiled and greeted her.

“Hey, Nella.”

Nella gave a faint nod, stepped closer, and listened to his chest through his hospital gown.

“You seem to be doing well. Does the wound still hurt?”

Patrick shook his head. “It doesn’t hurt anymore.”

Nella nodded again and quickly wrote something on his chart.

After giving him the same reminders as yesterday and carefully instructing the caregiver, she prepared to leave.

Just as she opened the door, Patrick called out to her.

“Nella.”

Her marriage to Alfred wouldn’t have been any better, even without Patrick.

There was no point wasting energy on this.

“Get some good rest.”

With that, Nella walked out of the room.

She’d barely taken two steps when she ran straight into Zoey coming around the corner.

The moment Zoey saw her, a flash of hostility flared in her eyes.

Her gaze instinctively slid past Nella’s shoulder, looking behind her.

Nella knew exactly what she was checking for and smiled.

“Relax. Alfred isn’t here.”

Her thoughts exposed, Zoey’s expression shifted.

She shot Nella a hard glare, then brushed past her toward Patrick’s room.

As she passed, she stopped and lowered her voice in warning.

“If you try to steal Alfred from me, I won’t let you off.”

Nella couldn’t help laughing.

Zoey frowned in anger and snapped, “What are you laughing at?”

“Relax. I’m not competing with you.”

She’d originally planned to tell Zoey that Alfred had a fever and was home, and that she could go keep him company.
