As a doctor herself, Scarlett could tell the injury to her leg was serious. Maybe even more serious than she wanted to admit.

Not knowing the full extent of the damage made her panic even worse.

Tears slipped down her cheeks, hot and helpless.

Just then, her phone rang.

She reached for it without checking the screen and brought it to her ear, voice already unsteady. "Hello?"

On the other end, Nolan's voice came through, calm and gentle. "Scarlett. Did everything go okay today?"

He'd wanted to call her since dropping her off at Ravenshade Villa that morning. He kept stopping himself, not wanting to seem pushy or overbearing. But now, he couldn't wait any longer.

Scarlett bit her lip and tried to steady her breathing. "Not... not yet."

She did her best to hide the crying in her voice, but Nolan caught it anyway. Something was off.

His tone shifted, concern creeping in. "What's wrong? Are you not feeling well?"

She forced herself to swallow the ache in her chest. "Nolan, I'm fine. You should get some rest. I have to go."

Before he could respond, she hung up.

She dropped the phone onto the bed and buried her face in the pillow, body trembling as she cried.

After a while, the tears slowed. She felt a little steadier. Picking up her phone again, she called the head of her department.

She explained what happened and requested a month of leave.

Her leg would need surgery. Then rehab. A month might not even be enough.

Once that was handled, she realized how thirsty she was. She reached for the glass of water on the nightstand.

Her fingers stretched out, but the glass was just out of reach.

No matter how she strained, she couldn't quite get to it.

Frustrated, she pushed herself harder, shifting her weight to the side. Just as her fingertips brushed the edge of the glass, she lost her balance and tumbled off the bed.

A heavy thud echoed through the room as she hit the floor.

Her arm knocked the glass over on the way down. It shattered on impact, scattering sharp pieces everywhere. When she landed, her face and hands pressed into the broken shards.

Pain shot through her instantly—sharp, stinging, overwhelming.

The noise didn't go unnoticed. A nurse walking past the door stopped, pushed it open, and froze at the sight.

"Doctor! Doctor!"
