No Second Baby No You Only Divorce (Scarlett and Vincent) novel Chapter 555

Vincent had just reached the door of his bedroom when his phone started ringing.

Vanessa hadn't planned on answering it, but when it kept ringing, she walked over and picked it up.

"Hello?"

The nurse on the other end hesitated when she heard a child's voice. "Hi, sweetheart. Is your mom or dad around?"

Vanessa kept her voice neutral. "Who's calling?"

The nurse explained, "This is Rivergate General Hospital, from the surgical ward. Do you know Scarlett?"

At the mention of Scarlett's name, Vanessa's expression flickered for just a second before she answered flatly, "No. Never heard of her."

The nurse pulled the phone back and checked the number against the patient intake form. It matched.

She muttered under her breath, "This is the right number... How could it be wrong?"

She tried again, but Vanessa didn't respond to anything she said after that. Instead, she quietly deleted the call from the recent log.

When Vincent came out of the bathroom, towel drying his hair, he found Vanessa standing there holding his phone, staring off into space.

He frowned slightly. "Vanessa? What are you looking at?"

She turned around quickly, a bright smile spreading across her face. "Nothing. I was gonna call Sabrina, but I couldn't find her number anywhere."

Hearing Sabrina's name, Vincent's brow furrowed even more.

It struck him as strange. Vanessa had been talking about Scarlett nonstop the past couple of days—missing her, asking when she'd come back. But now that Scarlett was hurt, in the hospital, she hadn't asked a single question.

He set the towel down and walked over to her, crouching so they were at eye level.

"Vanessa," he said carefully, "Mom hurt her leg. She's in the hospital. Do you want to go see her?"

Vanessa didn't hesitate. "Dad, I have school tomorrow. Maybe another time."

He studied her face. "But you said you missed her."

Her answer came out smooth, almost rehearsed. "I do miss her. But I'm not a doctor, Dad. Going to the hospital won't help her get better."

Her eyes were wide and innocent, her expression earnest. But something about it didn't sit right with him. Just days ago, she'd been practically begging to see Scarlett. Now, after an accident, she showed almost no concern.

The words Scarlett had said in the hospital came creeping back into his mind.
